Rijeka, 26 May 2010
A group of eighteen debaters from Catalonia, Cruïlla de debat, sojourn in Rijeka. They arrived in our city on the initiative of Maja Stibilj, a Zagreber who has been living and working in Barcelona for years. The guests from Barcelona were received by the mayor of the City of Rijeka, Vojko Obersnel who took part in their traditional debate on Wednesday.

Catalan debaters meet with Mayor Obersnel Their traditional debate on Wednesday was held aboard the ship "Arca Fiumana", otherwise the debaters meet at the institution "Ateneo barcelonès" in Barcelona, established as far back as 1860 with the intention of promoting dialogue and research and widening artistic, literary, humanistic and scientific skills and knowledge, as well as incentivising the development of the Catalan culture and language, by organising courses, seminars, lecturers, roundtables and other similar occasional activities.

"Cruïlla de debat" (The Debate Crossroads) is one of the most popular work groups that has been meeting at "Ateneo barcelonès" for more than fifteen years, every Wednesday at 02:00 p.m. and while enjoying light Mediterranean meals for lunch, the participants analyse actual topics owing to a renowned invited speaker, who first explains the specified subject, so that all the present debaters may actively discuss it while having dessert and coffee.

As an ordinary member of "Ateneo barcelonès" in February of the current year, Maja Stibilj gave a lecture to the Cruïlla de debat group members on the Croatian way to freedom and the historical similarities and overlaps that connect both Mediterranean countries, the result of which was the wish of Catalan participants to experience the Republic of Croatia, apart from images and words, through their traditional debate lunch on Wednesday on our territory as well.

Within their sojourn in Croatia, the debaters' group watched the performance of Ravel's ballet Daphnis and Chloe at the Croatian National Theatre Ivan Zajc, they went sightseeing Rijeka and Istria and visited the Zamet Centre, where they supported the Catalan bowlers who take part in the 15th edition of the Under 23 International Nine-Pin Bowling Championship.
