Rijeka Welcomes Worlds Largest Floating Book Fair
MV DOULOS, the worlds largest floating book fair and oldest active ocean going passenger ship, is making a first ever visit to Croatia. Built in 1914, the vessel has travelled to 94 countries all over the world. Now DOULOS is open to the public in Rijeka from Friday 18th July to Thursday 31st July.

"Fiumanka" Sailing Race
"Fiumanka" is a sailing race that traditionally takes place in June when Rijeka celebrates Saint Vitus, the city´s patron. During the "Fiumanka" week, all the colors of the city move into the docks at the waterfront.

Italian Ambassador visits Rijeka
The Italian ambassador, His Excellency Alessandro Grafini, is in his first official visit to Rijeka. During the reception held in this occasion at the City of Rijeka Hall, the Deputy Mayor, Ms. Vesna Lukanovic, acquainted the Ambassador with the social and economic situation in Rijeka, stressing the importance and the role of the Italian ethnic minority in Rijeka.

Rijeka delegation visits Lebanon, Egypt, Algeria and Morocco
Within the scope of activities referring to the City of Rijeka candidacy for obtaining the Mediterranean Games 2009, the City of Rijeka delegation headed by the Mayor, Vojko Obersnel, Deputy Mayor, Luciano Sušanj and the President of the Croatian Olympic Committee, Zlatko Mateša, has left for a visit to Lebanon, Egypt, Algeria and Morocco.

Beethoven´s "Eroica" in former Torpedo factory
By numerous commemorative events Rijeka is celebrating the 150th Anniversary of the Torpedo factory, in which, according to the invention of a Rijeka citizen, Giovanni Biagio Luppis, and a British, Robert Whitehead, the first torpedo was produced.

Rijeka Bonsai Exhibition wins silver medal at IGA 2003 in Rostock
The friendly Hanseatic town of Rostock has given the City of Rijeka the possibility to participate at the International Exhibition in a Hall, called “In Ten Days round the World”, which is held as part of the International Horticultural Exhibition IGA 2003 in Rostock.

Ecclestone aqrees to work with Mediterranean Games 2OO9 – if Rijeka wins
Almeria,Spain, 17th October: Formula One supremo, Bernie Ecclestone, was today unveiled as the surprise package in Rijekas (Croatia) final plans for their bid to host the 2009 Mediterranean Games. Mr Ecclestone has agreed that, should Rijeka be awarded the games on 18th October 2003, he would become Honorary Chairman of the Marketing Committee that would report to the Rijeka 2009 Organising Committee.

Sports and Recreation Zone Kantrida Project Presented
The presentation of the Sports and Recreation Zone Kantrida project was held in the City of Rijeka Council Hall on Friday 3rd October 2003. The head of the City Urban Development, Environmental and Land Management Department, Mr. Milorad Milošević, presented the Sports and Recreation Zone Kantrida project while the Kantrida Swimming Pool project was presented by Mr. Alessandro Zoppini, in the name of the Milan Technical Bureau Pino Zoppini, the maker of the plan, project and programme documentation of the swimming pool hall complex.

Third Rijeka Candidacy to Host Mediterranean Games - We Trust in Ourselves
On Saturday 18th October, The International Mediterranean Games Committee should pass the decision on the host town for the 16th Mediterranean Games. Besides Rijeka, candidates are the Italian town of Pescara and the Greek town of Patras.

Rijeka to Host 5th Annual General Assembly of Forum of Adriatic and Ionian Cities
Rijeka will host and preside over the fifth Annual General Assembly of the Forum of Adriatic and Ionian Cities and Towns, which will be held on 24th and 25th of October 2003. The Assembly will focus on the issues of European integration, regional cooperation, twinning of towns and environmental protection.

Rijeka did not pass voting for the host town for the 16th Mediterranean Games
On Saturday 18th October, the International Mediterranean Games Committee voted Pescara to be the host town of the 16th Mediterranean Games.

5th Annual Assembly of Adriatic and Ionian Towns Concluded
The fifth Annual General Assembly of the Forum of Adriatic and Ionian Towns was held in Rijeka from 24th to 25th October, its emphasis being on strengthening regional cooperation.

Eurocities Conference in Venice – Culture for the development of the Mediterranean Cities
The Mayor of Rijeka, Mr. Vojko Obersnel, upon the invitation of the Mayor of Venice, Mr. Paolo Costa, took part in the conference “Culture for the development of the Mediterranean Cities”, held in Venice on 30th November 2003. The Conference was organised as part of the activities of Eurocities, the association of European metropolitan cities, Rijeka being its member.

U.S. Ambassador visits Rijeka
The Ambassador of the United States of America, His Excellency Mr. Ralph Frank, visited the City of Rijeka on Friday 4th December.The American Ambassador, who was in his first visit to Rijeka, was received by the Mayor of Rijeka, Mr. Vojko Obersnel, and the President of the City Council, Mr. Željko Glavan.

Rijeka Hosts Main Round Matches of 16th Women’s World Championship in Handball
Rijeka, 27th November 2003 The main round matches of the second group of the 16th Women’s World Championship in Handball will be held in Rijeka from 8 – 12th December. Matches will be played in the Mladost sports hall. The teams and the officials will be staying at Opatija hotels. Nine of the Championship matches will be played in Rijeka.

"Golden Key" awarded to the City of Rijeka
Rijeka, 9th December 2003 Rijeka, as an open and tolerant city, was awarded the “Golden Key” in Brčko, Bosnia and Herzegovina, in the Hotel Grand on 10th December 2003 at 8 0’clock in the evening. Mr. Luciano Sušanj, Rijeka Deputy Mayor in charge of sports and technical culture, received this honour, which once again confirms the status of Rijeka as an open and tolerant city.

First Rijeka Ice-skating Rink
The first Rijeka ice-skating rink was opened on Saturday 6th December. It is especially interesting to note that the ice-skating rink is next to the very sea, on the Gat Karolina riječka (Karolina Riječka Pier), only 1,5 m above the sea level.

Santa Claus Tram
Rijeka, 5th December 2003 Much to the joy of children, the Tourist Board of the City of Rijeka will organise rides in the Santa Claus Tram this year, too. The tram will circulate the town from 5th December 2003 till 11th January 2004.

Water Supply System Construction Contract Rijeka – Krk and Tribalj - Urinj
Rijeka 12th December 2003 In two years the inhabitants of the Island of Krk will be drinking the high-quality Rijeka water, while in the summer season, when due to a great number of tourists the water consumption is many times increased, they will have a certainty not to be left without this vitally important liquid. Not only tourism but also the Krk industry will profit from this water supply system construction, as big users will have the possibility to use technological water in quantities that will meet their needs and safeguard their production.

Rijeka received resources for projects of E&E Regional Participant Training Program under auspices of USAID
Rijeka, 16th December 2003 With two of its projects the City of Rijeka has become part of the Small Grants project run by the World Learning, its Zagreb office. Ksenija Linić, the head of City Administration Office, is in charge of one of the projects, “Citizen Participation in Effective Assets Management”, while Doris Sošić is in charge of the other, “Marketing Plan for Porin as Development Agency”.

The Pope among us
From June, 5th to June, 9th the town of Rijeka had welcome Holy Father John Paul II. Holly Father arrived to the airport of Rijeka in Omišalj from Rome on June, 5th. From there he continued his journey to Rijeka by ship. This was his third visit to the Republic of Croatia. The Holy Father stayed in Rijeka for 5 days and from Rijeka he wisited other croatian towns.
