Rijeka, 27th September 2006
A high delegation of UEFA inspection visited the city of Rijeka on the account of Croatia/Hungary bid for the final round of the European World Championship - UEFA EURO 2012. A number of activities were organised as part of the inspection visit, so that on the first day the presentation of the bid was held in the City Hall, while the visit of Rijeka sports infrastructure and Opatija hotel facilities was planned on the following day.

The City of Rijeka Mayor Vojko Obersnel and the director manager of Bononia 3 M Construction Ltd. Co. Rijeka Carmine Lanzaro signed Precontract for establishing the construction permission that regulates the rights and obligations for building the underground garage and the aboveground facilities at the location of Gomila in the Old town of Rijeka. Bononia 3 M Construction Ltd. Co. Rijeka offered for the concession in the period of 99 years the amount of 9.093.500,00 Euros.

Beginning with 17th January 2006, the city of Rijeka entered its "5th Season" - a season of partying and parading that satisfies both young and old. The 23rd International Carnival of Rijeka began by raising of the carnival's flag. A few days later, the opening ceremony took place with the Carnival queen contest and with the city of Rijeka Mayor's symbolic delivery of the City keys to the Master of the Carnival.

15th Masked Car-Rally Pariz-Bakar gathered 93 masked vehicles and over 350 representatives from our region, together with the guests from Pula, Bjelovar, Osijek, and from abroad. This unique motorised masquerade, which represents an important event of the Rijeka Carnival, traditionally raced on the route Pariz – Korzo – Kostrena – Bakar.

The Ambassador of the Kingdom of Norway in Croatia Her Excellency Elisabeth Walaas accompanied by an honorary consul of the Kingdom of Norway in the city of Rijeka Alceo Frank visited Rijeka, where they attended a reception held by the city of Rijeka Mayor Vojko Obersnel, and his deputies Romana Jerković and Đani Poropat.

The British Council Croatia in collaboration with Museum of modern and contemporary art Rijeka, and Helena Srakočić-Kovač, a photo gallery custodian from London, organised a photography workshop Urban Regeneration that was held in the period from 13th till 17th February in Mali salon gallery in Rijeka. Tutor of the workshop was British photographer and lecturer D. J. Clark.

For the 10th year running, the Children's Carnival Parade gathered more than 4 thousand of nursery and primary school children from the city of Rijeka, County of Primorje-Gorski Kotar, Kvarner islands of Cres, Krk, and Lošinj, the guests from Tisno, Bol on Brač Island, Opuzen, together with the masked groups form Slovenia, Hungary and Serbia and Montenegro.

In the presence of many respectable guests from Croatia and abroad, in Villa Kozulich that used to be a kindergarten, in the part of the city called Pećine, is opened the first youth hostel in Rijeka. The hostel has the capacity of 60 beds, and is equipped according to the highest world standards for that type of accommodation. The youth hostel will be opened all through the year.

On the occasion of the opening of the first youth hostel in Rijeka, the City of Rijeka Mayor Vojko Obersnel with his associates held a reception for the president of the Inernational Youth Hostel Federation dr. Harish Saxena who came to Croatia for the first time, especially for this occasion.

This year's International Carnival Parade in Rijeka will be remembered as one of the most successful and most attended. The hopes for good weather came true, and more than 100 thousand visitors enjoyed watching the magnificent parade that passed through the centre of Rijeka. The pared consisted of 110 organised carnival groups with 80 allegorical carriages and more than 8000 masked participants.

City of Rijeka Mayor, Mr. Vojko Obersnel, together with his associates, has had a working meeting with the Czech Republic Minister of Culture, Mr. Vítězslav Jandák. As part of his official visit to Rijeka, the Czech Minister of Culture visited the Czech Cultural Centre in Rijeka that is being built in Pehlin.

The Symposium on the Rijeka &Vienna traffic route, jointly organised by the cities of Rijeka and Vienna, is based on the so-far successful cooperation of the two cities in development practices concerning the fostering of communal infrastructure and the revitalisation of their industrial heritage. The aim of this Symposium is to encourage the cooperation of all the subjects in order to strengthen European traffic corridors connecting the cities of Rijeka and Vienna.

The City of Rijeka delegation, led by the City of Rijeka Mayor Vojko Obersnel, visited a friendly town of Csepel, in the county of Budapest in Hungary. In the newly arranged Park of friendship, opposite to the City Hall, on Sunday, 2nd April, the sculpture of bow was placed as a sign of friendship between the two cities. The bow that represents the gift of the City of Rijeka to the City of Csepel was made out of steel in the shipyard "3. maj" in Rijeka.

The new Ambassador of Japan to the Republic of Croatia, His Excellency Mr. Tetsuhiso Shirakawa, has visited the City of Rijeka in his first official visit.  Ambassador Shirakawa was received by Mayor Vojko Obersnel, President of the City Council Dorotea Pešić Bukovac and Deputy Mayor Romana Jerković, who acquainted him with the excellent cooperation between Rijeka and Kawasaki, the first city that Rijeka started its friendly affiliation with.

The president of the Croatian Olympic Committee, Mr. Zlatko Mateša, was in official visit to the City of Rijeka, where he could learn in detail about the preparations made for the organisation of the European Championship in Small Swimming Pools to be held in Rijeka in 2008, and also about the tasks that Rijeka is carrying out as a possible host of a part of the games of the European Football Championship in 2012. On that occasion Mateša said that, in spite of all, Rijeka should apply to host the 2013 Mediterranean Games as the projects announced during former candidatures are already in the phase of realisation.

The 13th International Small Scene Theatre Festival will be held from May 3-11, 2006, and will host twelve plays from Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Croatia, Germany, Russia, Slovenia, Serbia and Montenegro, and Great Britain. The selector Hrvoje Ivanković has based his choice on the top-quality mainstream as well as on the best examples of the opened, research theatre, while at the same time the selected plays reflect different poetics, styles and genres.

The Croatian delegation, members of which are also the City of Rijeka Mayor Vojko Obersnel and the City Council President Dorotea Peršić Bukovac, is in the official visit to China from 23rd to 30th April of 2006. They are visiting the cities of Qingdao, Dalian and Beijing. The City of Qingdao Mayor Mr. Xia Geng, together with his associates, received the City of Rijeka delegation lead by Mayor Vojko Obersnel and accompanied by the Croatian Ambassador to China Mr Boris Velić on Monday 24th April 2006.

The inauguration ceremony of the exhibition "Architecture of Rijeka 1845 – 1945", in the organisation of the Rijeka Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, marked the beginning of the of Croatian Days – Day of Rijeka, manifestation held in the Chinese town of Dalian. Upon the opening ceremony, the City of Dalian Mayor, Mr. Xia Deren, together with his associates, received the City of Rijeka delegation. During the reception there was the signing of the Agreement on establishing friendly cooperation between the City of Rijeka and the City of Dalian, and of the Agreement on the friendly cooperation of representatives of Chambers of Commerce of the two cities.

The General Assembly of the International Association of Cities & Ports, which numbers 170 members from five continents, was held today in Rijeka. The Association numbers more than 100 port cities, while their members are representatives of port cities, port authorities, organisations and companies that are economic and institutional partners of port cities, experts and scientists. The city of Rijeka has been a member of this association since the year 2003. Together with the city of Rijeka, AIVP members are also the Port of Rijeka Authority and the Port of Dubrovnik Authority.

The card bears the motif of Rijeka painter Vojo Radoičić, and together with the accompanying brochure, to be handed to its purchasers, will represent the best guide through our city.

Together with other 83 cities, the City of Rijeka takes part in the 4th phase of the project of European Healthy Cities. One of the basic objectives of this project is healthy aging, namely all relating to the needs of the elderly regarding health, care and the quality of life. The commitment of the City of Rijeka that has taken active part in this project was the making of the profile of the elderly, on the basis of which an action plan for healthy aging can be adopted.

City of Rijeka mayor Vojko Obersnel, city council president Dorotea Pešić Bukovac, as well as the deputy mayor responsible for entrepreneurship Đani Poropat, held reception for the delegation of the Chinese city of Qingdao. The delegation headed by Qingdao mayor Xia Geng stayed in Rijeka from 21st till 23rd of September. During this time they were able to become acquainted with the economic activities of Rijeka and possibilities of a cooperation of businessmen of the two cities.

15th European Bocce Championship was officially opened at Podvežica bowling court, with the participation of the president of the Croatian Bocce Federation Šime Bulić, the president of the International Bocce Federation (Fédération Internationale de Boules - F.I.B.) Alphonse Lagier Bruno, the president of the Executive Board of the European Championship Luciano Sušanj, Primorje-Gorski kotar County prefect Zlatko Komadina, and many well-known personalities from the world of bocce playing. Rijeka mayor Vojko Obersnel had the honour to open the Championship.

The delegation of Rijeka headed by the City Council president Dorotea Pešić Bukovac was in the visit to the Italian City of Este for the event of Festa Europea from 5th to 8th of October 2006. Rijeka was represented by the typical cuisine of Primorje, its music and the photo exhibition entitled “Rijeka in camera obscura” by the Photo Club “Rijeka”. The Cinquina Klapa (harmony singing group) performed with songs from Primorje at the dinner prepared by the diligent cooks of the Grand Hotel Bonavia from Rijeka.

From 12th to 13th October the Autumn Event of the Eurocities Knowledge Society Forum - TeleCities, of which the City of Rijeka is a member, takes place in Turin. The Conference with the work title “E-services for e-citizens” deals with issues of e-governance and services available to “virtual citizens”. Besides the plenary session, the programme also comprises a number of separate specialised workshops.

A delegation of the Chinese Province of Liaoning and the City of Yingkou visited the City of Rijeka. They were received by Rijeka Mayor Vojko Obersnel, City Council President Dorotea Pešić Bukovac and Deputy Mayor responsible for entrepreneurship Đani Poropat. During the reception it was highlighted that already in the year 2002 the cooperation with businessmen from Rijeka and the Primorje-Gorski kotar County was initiated, while the goal of the latest visit was to conclude transactions in the field of textile and wood industry.

After a five day visit, the ICMG Commission for Evaluation of candidate cities concluded that the City of Rijeka candidacy file for the 2013 Mediterranean Games had been prepared extremely well, while they found the realisation of sports and other facilities particularly impressive. The Committee President Jacques Grospeillet expressed his conviction in the fair voting of the International Committee of Mediterranean Games for the selection of the 2013 Mediterranean Games host city, to take place in Italy in November 2007.
