European Healthy Cities Network Business Meeting in Rijeka
Rijeka, 13 December 2007 The City of Rijeka hosted a business meeting of the European Healthy Cities Network, one of the World Health Organisation projects, on 10th and 11th December 2007. There were 30 representatives from 14 European cities participating at the meeting. These cities are intensively addressing the theme of healthy aging, and it was the integration of healthy aging and healthy urban planning that was the main topic of the meeting.

Four New Web Cams on City of Rijeka Portal
Rijeka, 5th December 2007 The City of Rijeka portal has become richer today owing to four new web cams showing Rijeka cultural and historical sights. Besides their function in the tourist promotion of the city, these web cams enable the citizens of Rijeka who live abroad to view their city “alive” at any moment. You can view the Trsat Castle, the Theatre Park together with the Ivan pl. Zajc Croatian National Theatre, the port of Rijeka and the panorama of the city from the sea.

Rijeka Continues to Lobby in Pescara
Pescara, 26th October 2007 On the eve of tomorrow's General Assembly of the Mediterranean Games, when there will be the election of the 2013 Mediterranean Games Host City, Rijeka delegation in Pescara continues to lobby among «voters», members of national Olympic committees. After many talks, members of the delegation headed by Mayor Vojko Obersnel pointed out that they are more optimistic and that they believe that it is Rijeka that will become the Host City of the Games.

The City of Rijeka delegation arrived to Pescara
Rijeka, 25th October 2007 The City of Rijeka delegation arrived to Pescara, where the Mediterranean Games EC Meetings are taking place and where there will be the election of the 2013 Host City at the General Assembly Meeting on Saturday. After the stands of Rijeka, Volosa and Mersina have been opened, a decision has to be taken on the sequence in which the cities will be presenting their candidatures.

First Croatian Fish Market opens in Rijeka
Rijeka 20th October 2007 The Rijeka Fish Market, the first of its kind in Croatia, was opened in the halls of the former Torpedo Factory. With the opening of the Fish Market, the first centre to sell fish by public auction, preconditions for the strengthening of fish trade have been created, but also those for a better quality of consumer supply.

Prime Minister of Sri Lanka Visits Rijeka
Rijeka, 11th September 2007 Sri Lankan Government delegation led by Prime Minister, His Excellency Ratnasiri Wickremanayake, is in its official visit to Rijeka. Mayor Vojko Obersnel, City Council President Dorotea Pešić Bukovac and Deputy Mayor Đani Poropat received Sri Lankan PM in the City of Rijeka Salon. Deputy Prefect Luka Denona welcomed the guests in the name of the Primorje-Gorski kotar county.

Rijeka 8th October 2007 The City of Rijeka official delegation led by Mayor Vojko Obersnel and joined by five musicians left for Kawasaki where they will be staying until 10th October 2007 to mark 30th anniversary of friendly relations between Rijeka and Kawasaki.

Principia of Alpine Enclosure in Old City
Rijeka, 24th July 2007 Although it was known before that in the Old City there are numerous remains of buildings from the Roman times, witnessed by the already discovered beautiful floor mosaics and an exceptionally well preserved stone arch, conservation archaeological works in the space of the former Principia of Alpine Enclosure confirmed that Rijeka with its historical remains from that period can compare favourably with cities such as Split and Pula, where such monuments have been very well preserved.

European University Volleyball Championship 2007
Rijeka, 12th July 2007 The University of Rijeka is the host and organiser of the European University Volleyball Championship 2007 (EUCV 2007 – Rijeka), so far the biggest students’ sports event in Croatia after the Universiad, to be held in Rijeka from 16th - 24th July 2007. The main organisers of the whole project are Rijeka University Sports Federation and the Students Assembly of the University in Rijeka, in cooperation with the Croatian University Sports Federation and the City of Rijeka.

First tourist Double-decker bus in Croatia
RIJEKA - On 8 June 2007 the touRIst bus made its first steps and welcomed the first visitors on its Opatija-Rijeka route, telling them during their trip interesting stories about the past and present of our cities. This idea has come to life, most of all, thanks to the efforts of the City of Rijeka and the Rijeka Tourist Board in the desire to enhance what is on offer to tourists so that our guests, and also local inhabitants, can experience our cities in a totally new way.

Free Wireless Internet Access in Rijeka
The IT Department of the City of Rijeka, in cooperation with the company “Krk sistemi" ltd., developed the Project of Free Wireless Internet Access for all the citizens that use portable computers, as well as all the tourists and visitors of this city. The free wireless Internet signal covers the downtown area, part of Trsat, the swimming-pool complex at Kantrida, the Centre Zamet, the Athletic Hall Kantrida, the cinema "Art-kino Croatia" and the Astronomy Centre Rijeka.

Reception for Representatives of National Democratic Institute Study Mission
Rijeka, 25th May 2007 Representatives of the study mission of the National Democratic Institute from Iraq paid a visit to Rijeka city government, becoming acquainted with the ways in which the city of Rijeka cooperates with the civil sector, ways in which NGOs’ projects are financed, modes of a two-way communication of the city government and its citizens, and also with the right of access to information. Representatives of the National Democratic Institute are in their visit to Croatia in the organisation of GONG.

Memorandum of Continuation of Friendly Cooperation between Rijeka and Kawasaki
Rijeka, 8th May 2007 Marking the 30th anniversary of friendly cooperation between Rijeka and the Japanese city of Kawasaki at the History and Maritime Museum in Rijeka, the mayors of the two cities signed the Memorandum of continuation of friendly cooperation, renewed every ten years as a confirmation of good cooperation and friendly relations. The official delegation of the city of Kawasaki is staying in Rijeka from 7th till 9th May.

Charter on Cooperation of Fishing Organisations of Luben and Csepel
Rijeka, 20th April 2007 The Sport Fishing Organisation of Luben from Rijeka has signed the Charter on friendly cooperation with the Sport Fishing Organisation of Csepel from the friendly Hungarian city of Csepel. The signing of the Charter was preceded by the ceremony of inaugurating the electrically operated boat crane on Delta. Members of the SFO Luben used to operate the crane manually, while on this occasion they were presented with the electric motor by their friends from the SFO of Csepel.

Final Meeting of Project Urban Environmental Management Plans in South European Area
Rijeka, 14th March 2007 In the Rijeka city hall, the final meeting of the Project Urban Environmental Management Plans in the South European Area (ENIVIPLANS) was held, with the participation of representatives of the Forum of Adriatic-Ionian Cities and Towns, and partners and representatives of cities that took part in the Project, among which there is also the City of Rijeka. ENVIPLANS is a project initiated upon the request of the European Commission in the January of 2005, with the aim to predict and develop concepts of management of urban environment, as a basis for the preparation of a Strategy on the Urban Environment.

Mayor Obersnel Receives Award of Recognition by City of Csepel
Rijeka, 14th March 2007 At its session of 20th February 2007, the City Council of Csepel, Budapest District 21, decided to confer to the City of Rijeka Mayor Vojko Obersnel Award of Recognition «For Csepel» for his contribution to friendly relations between the two cities in the last ten years, as well as for his successful and exceptional contribution in the promotion of cooperation, mutual understanding and communication of culture between citizens of Csepel and Rijeka.

Charity Carnival Ball
Rijeka 19th February 2007 It was the 9th time that the City of Rijeka organised a Charity Carnival Ball in the Palace of the Maritime and History Museum of the Hrvatsko primorje Region. “Music Makes the World Go Round” was the theme of this year’s Carnival Ball. There were around 500 guest from Croatia and abroad, among whom also ambassadors and diplomatic representatives of various countries and institutions.

International Carnival Parade Gathers Around Ten Thousand Participants
Rijeka, 18th February 2007 Taking part in this year’s, 24th International Carnival Parade, there were 95 carnival groups and ten thousand participants from the Primorje-Gorski kotar County, Istria, Dalmatia, continental Croatia, as well as groups from abroad, namely, from Italy, Montenegro and Brazil. According to the estimation of organisers, the carnival parade was followed by around hundred thousand people from Rijeka, other parts of Croatia and abroad, while the beautiful weather made its contribution for the carnival groups and their floats to be seen in full splendour.

New Kantrida Pools Building Site in Web Camera Eyes
Rijeka, 1st February 2007 The story of the construction of new Kantrida swimming pools has now an additional, “picture” dimension, thanks to the web camera placed by the Strabag company. Namely, Strabag, with building sites all over Europe, introduced on its web site a link to the web camera that daily records the situation on the Kantrida pools building site. The camera gets refreshed every hour, while the photographs it records are assembled, similarly to a photo album, into a calendar that truly shows the daily growth of this complex.

A Book - Postage Stamps of Rijeka, Fiume 1918 - 1924
Rijeka, 25th January 2007 There are few cities in the world that in the last hundred years experienced as much historical turmoil as Rijeka. There are still fewer cities-states that printed their own postage stamps. The tumultuous history of Rijeka in the period from 1918 up to 1924 was recorded as a period when Rijeka, due to its specific conditions, among other things also had its own currency and postage stamps. Nowadays, the stamps of Rijeka can be found as a separate entity under the name of Fiume.

Kingdom of the Netherlands Ambassador Catharina Maria Trooster in Inaugural Visit to Rijeka
Rijeka, 21st February 2007 The Ambassador of the Kingdom of the Netherlands Catharina Maria Trooster made her first official visit to the City of Rijeka. She was received by Rijeka Mayor Vojko Obersnel together with his associates and the head of the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art Branko Franceschi. The present excellent cooperation of the City of Rijeka and the Kingdom of the Netherlands was pointed out and new projects to foster connections of Rijeka and the Netherlands were announced.
