LEN Championships with the most records ever
“We experienced fantastic Championships and a very good organisation by our Croatian hosts. It was an excellent conclusion to the 2008 Olympic year”, said Nory Kruchten, the President of the European Swimming Federation (LEN), in his final statement regarding the 12th European Short Course Swimming Championships in Rijeka. In its more than 80 years of history, LEN had never experienced a Championships with as many records as were seen last week at the Kantrida Swimming Complex. A total of 32 European Records have been set in the heats, semi-finals and finals of the 38 events, of which ten were also World Records and seven were World Best Times in the 4x50m relays which are not officially recognised with World Records by the International Swimming Federation (FINA).

Rijeka, 12 December 2008 The new swimming pool complex of Kantrida was in its full splendour last night at the opening of the 12th edition of the European Short Course Swimming Championship where until 14 December 530 swimmers from 41 countries will compete, so far the largest number of participants in a championship. It is the most important sports event of the year in the country, where as many as 31 members of the Croatian national team will take part.

Rijeka, 9 December 2008 "All the steps have been taken to ensure that the organisation of the competition is at the level of the greatest sports manifestations" – these words were said at the media conference about the 12th edition of the European Short Course Swimming Championship to be held from 11 to 14 December 2008 at the swimming pools of Kantrida. The greatest number of swimmers up to now, namely 530 swimmers from 40 countries will participate in this most important sports event in Croatia this year.

It relates to ten low floor buses equipped with air conditioning that will arrive in Rijeka next year in March. By acquiring these buses the age of the bus vehicle fleet of Autotrolej will average 10 years.

Announced the 3rd festival of chamber music in Rijeka

Closed "Rijeka Summer Nights 2008"
Rijeka, 28 July 2008 The fifth jubilee edition of the festival "Rijeka Summer Nights" has been closed in a solemn ceremony and the award of prizes in front of the building of the Croatian National Theatre Ivan pl. Forming an international women's team crew for the America's Cup
Rijeka, 16 July 2008 A partnership agreement has been signed between the Sailing Club of Rijeka SCOR and the consortium Fuxia Challenge within the project for the establishment of an international women's team crew that will take part in the next America's Cup, the largest sailing competition in the world. Thus, for the first time Croatia will have its representative at the America’s Cup, where Rijeka and its sports tradition will be promoted.

Initiated the construction of the Astronomy Centre - Planetarium
Rijeka, 18 July 2008 The construction of the Astronomy Centre – Planetarium has started on the St Cross's hill, which is expected to be finished by the end of December. Within reconstruction, further to the existing observatory, the premises of the Planetarium will be built. This year's regatta Fiumanka did not miss the wind
Rijeka, 16 June 2008 Regatta Big Fiumanaka, held on Saturday on the route Rijeka Omišalj – Rijeka gathered 143 domestic and foreign crews. Unlike the passed years, this year's regatta Fiumanka did not miss the wind. Rain and the air temperature reaching unbelievable 14 degrees spoilt the real atmosphere of Fiumanka ashore; however all the sailors' prayers were more than answered.

The ninth "Fiumanka" – days of sports and fun

Workshop on the Rijeka Gateway project organised by the World Bank

The ancient bronze statue Apoxyomenos in Rijeka

Rijeka, 30 April 2008 The City Museum, in cooperation with the Association of Anti-Fascist Fighters and Anti-Fascists of the city of Rijeka, has staged the photographic exhibition titled "Rijeka after 3 May 1945". The exhibition features the photographs of ruins and massive material devastation that Rijeka suffered during the Second World War.

The 12th international meeting-Oldtimer Auto Rally Rijeka 2008
Rijeka, 29 April 2008 The Oldtimer Club Rijeka, for the twelfth time in a row, is organizing the international meeting under the name of "Oldtimer auto rally 2008". The oldtimer cars competition, which will take place on 3 and 4 May, has been traditionally described as a sports-touristic event and has been included in the Calendar of Meetings of the Croatian Oldtimer Association.

Trsat to get free wireless Internet access
Rijeka, 21 April 2008 The area of free wireless Internet coverage in Rijeka has been expanded to Trsat, including the area of Trsat Castle, the Sanctuary as well as the Youth Sports Hall. The number of access points, used to have the area covered by the signal, has been increased to 39, thus making possible for citizens and tourists a broader access to the wireless Internet.

The 4th International Fair of New Technologies

The Days of Francophony and French Culture in Rijeka

Presented the international project "Touch"
Rijeka, 19 February 2008 In collaboration with the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences of the University of Rijeka and the City Department of Health and Social Welfare, an international project called "Touch" was presented to representatives of associations and institutions. International Carnival Parade Gathers Around Ten Thousand Participants
Rijeka, 4 February 2008 In this years' 25th International Carnival Parade, which represents a culmination of Rijeka Carnival, around ten thousand participants gathered in 100 carnival groups and allegoric cars. According to the estimation of organizers, despite the rainy weather, the parade was followed by more dozens of thousands of people from Rijeka and their guests. The Parade started from Putnička obala exactly at noon, and upon the end of it followed a party which lasted all night long.

Charity Carnival Ball-"Silver Rijeka Carnival"
Rijeka, 4 February 2008 As a part of Rijeka Carnival, in the honor of its 25th anniversary, the Charity Carnival Ball took place in the Governor's Palace, named "Silver Rijeka Carnival". This is the tenth time that the Carnival Ball took place, but the fourth year in a row with a charity feature. Donations of the ball were intended for the Down Syndrome Association –Rijeka 21, which gathers children with Down syndrome and their parents.

A reception for the Chinese Ambassador
Rijeka, 25 January 2008 The new Ambassador of the People's Republic of China to Croatia, His Excellency Wu Lianqi, visited the City of Rijeka in his first official visit. Ambassador Lianqi was received by Mayor Vojko Obersnel, President of the City Council Dorotea Pešić-Bukovac and Deputy Mayor Đani Poropat, where they emphasized good contacts between the two people and the wish to continue the cooperation in the field of economy, culture, education and tourism.

Rijeka ring-road to be constructed
The missing southern roadway of Rijeka's ring-road which extends from Diračje to Orehovica, the construction of which was waited for 20 years, should be constructed by 1 June 2009.
