EUR 30 million for the construction of ”Marišćina”
Zagreb, 8 December 2011 An agreement worth EUR 30 million has been signed at the Environmental Protection and Energy Efficiency Fund for the performance of construction works relating to the waste management centre "Marišćina" in the Primorje - Gorski Kotar County. The agreement has been signed by the Fund, the delegation of the European Union to Croatia and the building contractor, consortium consisting of the Greek company “Helector” and “GP Krk”.

Unveiled memorial plaques on the Turkish House
Rijeka, 1 December 2011 Two memorial plaques in Croatian and Turkish, placed on the Turkish House, which from 1900 to 1918 served as the head offices of the Turkish Consulate in Rijeka, have been unveiled. The placed memorial plaques are intended to emphasise the importance of “Casa Turca”, a unique architectural achievement which represents Turkish culture and art.

Reception in honour of the Ambassador of Egypt
Rijeka, 29 November 2011 The representatives of the City of Rijeka held a reception in honour of the new ambassador of the Arab Republic of Egypt, Iman Mohamed Medhat ElFarr. At the meeting the parties discussed further cooperation between Rijeka and Egypt, first of all, in the field of the economy and culture. The Ambassador was received by the mayor of the City of Rijeka Vojko Obersnel, the president of the City Council Dorotea Pešić Bukovac and vice mayor Miroslav Matešić.

Becoming active community members owing to IT courses
Rijeka, 28 November 2011 A series of free IT courses, organised by the City Rijeka, within the EGOV4U project is drawing to an end. Not only is the aim of the courses to enable course-takers to improve the quality of their lives by applying the newly acquired IT skills, but moreover, to become active members in the local community by transferring their knowledge to other people.

Via e-Consultations towards a concession model for “Ploče” beach

The first Rijeka e-Consultation deals with “Ploče” beach, the newly built beach below the Kantrida Swimming Pool Complex, namely the concession model in the light of the future beach management and the development of facilities available on the beach.

Cinema audio description intended for the visually impaired people
Rijeka, 23 November 2011 Within the Children’s Rights Festival – the first inclusive film festival in Croatia, at the cinema “Art-kino Croatia” a presentation was held about cinema audio description intended for the visually impaired people. During a press briefing, journalists had an opportunity to experience for a couple of minutes a movie through headphones for the blind and vision impaired individuals, allowing them to follow movies.

Rijeka Mayor Vojko Obersnel at the second meeting of the EU project Seta in Bratislava

Opened the Children’s Rights Festival – the first inclusive festival
Rijeka, 21 November 2011 The third edition of the Children’s Rights Festival has been opened in the premises of “Art kino Croatia”, running under the motto "Everyone should/would like to/ go to the cinema”, taking place simultaneously in several Croatian cities, while its host city is the City of Rijeka. This is the first inclusive festival in Croatia, given that all the film projections are adjusted to children and adults with visual and hearing impairments.

Reception in honour of the Italian Ambassador
Rijeka, 15 November 2011 The mayor of the City of Rijeka, Vojko Obersnel together with deputy mayor Miroslav Matešić and the president of the City Council Dorotea Pešić Bukovac gave a reception in honour of the new Italian Ambassador to Croatia Emanuela D'Alessandro. At the reception the parties expressed their satisfaction with the cooperation achieved so far between Rijeka and Italy, and they expressed their intention to further improve mutual relationships.

EU SETA – South East European Transport Axis - project National Workshop
Rijeka, 11 November 2011 A national workshop was held in Rijeka relating to EU SETA– South East European Transport Axis – project financed by the European Regional Development Fund, in which the City of Rijeka takes part as a partner. “Open Days” devoted to the Delta and Porto Baros areas

Signed the Agreement of Friendly Cooperation with the Bitola Municipality

Reception for the Israeli national cadet basketball team

EU funding allocated to the development of therapeutic horseback riding included in the tourist offer
Rijeka, 18 October 2011 Therapeutic horseback riding association “Pegaz”, in co-operation with Slovenian foundation "Nazaj na konja", is implementing a project aimed at developing therapeutic horseback riding included in the tourist offer. The project is called "Pedo tur", and is financed from EU funds and is also financially assisted by the City of Rijeka and the Primorje Gorski – Kotar County. Within the project, the facilities at Draška dolina assigned to “Pegaz” by the City of Rijeka will be refurbished. “Pegaz” can utilise the facilities for a period of ten years, carrying out outdoor therapeutic and recreational activities.

Children’s Rights Festival – the first inclusive festival in Croatia
Rijeka, 19 October 2011 From 21 to 24 November, Rijeka will host the third edition of the Children’s Rights Festival. In addition to Rijeka, certain parts of the programme, this year addressing the topic "Equal Opportunities for all Children", will take place in Zagreb, Split, Osijek, Zadar and Šibenik. This is the first inclusive festival in Croatia, and the entire programme consisting of film projections and a number of workshops and lectures will be adjusted to children and adults with visual and hearing impairments.

Children from Neuss on a visit to Rijeka
Rijeka, 15 September 2011 A reception was given at the reception room of the City of Rijeka for professors and children of Junior High School Neuss-Holzheim from Neuss, our twin city, who sojourn in Rijeka from 12 to 16 September 2011. The children from Neuss, 28 pupils aged between 10 and 14, headmaster Wolfgang Spangenberger and 4 teachers were received by the head of the Department of education and schooling, Sanda Sušanj with her co-operators. The headmaster of ES "Zamet" Jadranka Sokal and teachers Silvija Nežić and Irena Crvić were also present at the reception.

Rijeka, 14 September 2011 A group of 17 Japanese teachers from Kawasaki, Tokyo, Yokohama, Sapporo, Chiba, Nagoya and Osaka sojourns in Rijeka from 13 to 15 September 2011, within a study visit organised by the Japan Teachers' Union. Owing to this study visit the Japanese professors and teachers will get to know better other countries' education systems in elementary and secondary schools, including, among others, Croatia.

Match between Croatia and Russia opened the European Junior Water-Polo Championship

European Junior Water-Polo Championship
Rijeka, 9 September 2011 From 11 to 18 September Rijeka will host the European Junior Water-Polo Championship to be held at the Kantrida Swimming Pool Complex. Sixty European national teams will take part in the Championship. Overall 400 participants and team members are expected. At the Championship 9 LEN delegates and 16 LEN referees will participate. The Championship is organised by the City of Rijeka, the Rijeka Sports Federation and the Croatian Water Polo Federation.

Agreement on the development of access roads to the passenger terminal
Rijeka, 2 September 2011 The City of Rijeka and the Port of Rijeka Authority have signed an agreement whereby co-financing the costs of the development of access roads to the maritime passenger terminal located on the Rijeka breakwater. The development of roads is a step included in the implementation of the project aimed at renewing the Rijeka traffic route – the Rijeka Gateway project.

Rijeka has got its dog beach
Rijeka, 19 July 2011 As of today, the owners of four legged pets will be able to take their dogs at a public beach, without fear of protests or of being forced to leave the beach. The City of Rijeka has arranged the beach of an area of about 500 sq. m. located on the dike to the east from the auxiliary field of Kantrida football stadium, next to the parking area, as a dog beach.

Mediterranean Diving Cup
Rijeka, 14 July 2011 From 15 July to 17 July 2011, the Kantrida swimming pool complex hosted the Mediterranean Junior Diving Cup. This diving competition was organized by the City of Rijeka, the Rijeka Sports Federation and the Croatian Diving Federation with about one hundred divers from nine countries, namely: Croatia, Italy, Switzerland, Serbia, Bulgaria, France, Greece, Turkey and Egypt.

Beach for disabled persons – Kostanj Bay
Rijeka, 28 June 2011 The beach for persons with disabilities is used primarily by individuals with severe and most severe bodily injuries and their families. The beach is not of closed type, therefore other individuals can use the beach if they comply with the rules of conduct. The beach is situated west of Rijeka, in the immediate proximity of a main road connecting Rijeka and Opatija Riviera. It is placed along a promenade in Kostanj Bay, at a beautiful and attractive part of Kvarner Bay coast, between the respective areas of Bivio and Preluk Bay.

An International Synchro Competition at the Kantrida Swimming Pools
Rijeka, 20 June 2011 From 23 to 26 June an international competition in synchronized swimming – the 11th Primorje Synchro Cup for juniors and younger juniors will be held at the Kantrida Swimming Pools. In the excellent Rijeka sports facilities 16 women’s teams of synchro swimmers from 11 European countries will demonstrate proficiency in this water sport that incorporates elements of swimming, gymnastics and dance.

Cooperation agreement signed between Rijeka and the German City of Karlsruhe

Rijeka, 13 June 2011 In the exhibition premises of Filodrammatica, at Korzo 28, an exhibition called „Rijeka and Rijeka citizens on photos“ by Virgil Mlesnita from Romania has been opened. This is an exhibition by the winner of last year's International exhibition "The City and the Water, the Water and the City" initiated by the photo club "Rijeka" within the project "PHOTORI". The Grand Prix winner, Virgil Mlesnita from Romania, sojourned in Rijeka for a week, taking photos of the city and its citizens, and what he recorded with his camera can be seen at the exhibition installed at Filodrammatica.

Signed the Agreement on Friendly Co-operation between Ningbo and Rijeka
Rijeka, 12 June 2011 In the period from 6 to 9 June 2011, a delegation of the City of Rijeka, led by mayor Vojko Obresnel sojourned in the return official visit to the City of Ningbo, Chinese city with a population of 8 million, during which the Agreement on Friendly Co-operation between the two cities was signed. Furthermore, meetings were held with the mayor of Ningbo Liu Qiem and other officials of Ningbo and Zhejiang Province.

Namely, the 10th edition of the Chinese International Consumer Goods Fair takes place in Ningbo from 8 to 11 June to which mayor Mao Gunaglie invited the representatives of the City of Rijeka during his last year's visit to Rijeka.

Inaugurated the diving pool
Rijeka, 3 June 2011 With a synchronised dive performed by the Croatian national team members Šime Perić and Marko Pervan, from the highest 10 m platform, the diving pool was inaugurated last night, whereby symbolically marking the completion of the construction of the Kantrida swimming pool complex. Following this, a high diving show prepared by the best Croatian and Italian divers was held.

"Acting, Media and Culture Studies" in Rijeka
Rijeka, 26 May 2011 The University of Rijeka has announced a competition to enrol students in the postgraduate specialised study programme "Acting, Media and Culture". Applications will be received by 15 August. The yacht "Galeb" anchored in the port of Rijeka
Rijeka, 27 May 2011 The yacht "Galeb", a former presidential yacht used by President Josip Broz Tito who hosted aboard a number of statesmen and famous people, is temporarily moored in the port of Rijeka. The yacht was declared a protected item of cultural heritage in order to save her from deterioration, after her owner, a Liberian company, had left her to decay at the shipyard "Viktor Lenac". Now the yacht is moored to the pier, and preparations aboard are underway for the exhibition "At a Standstill", organised by the art collector Marinko Sudac, the Avant-Garde Research Institute in cooperation with the City of Rijeka. The exhibition will remain open until 4 June.

Closed the 18th edition of the International Small Scene Theatre Festival
Rijeka, 9 May 2011 The jury composed of three members including Zoja Odak, actor Voja Brajović and theatrologist Darko Gašparović, decided that the provocative, satyr play, containing the elements of circus artistry, fierce performance and fierce music, play "Cyclops" given by the theatre "Scena" from Gorica should be awarded "Veljko Maričić" prize, as the overall best performance. Smartmetering – public monitoring of energy consumption in the City administration building

With Ryaniar first flight opened the flaying season at Rijeka Airport
Rijeka, 15 April 2011 The flying season at Rijeka Airport has been officially opened with the first flight made by the airline carrier Ryanair, carrying 180 passengers who arrived from London. Ryanair airplanes will connect Rijeka and Kvarner to Stockholm, while in co-operation with other companies, Rijeka Airport will maintain regular flights to London, Köln, Stuttgart, Košice, Düsseldorf and Münster/Osnabrück.

The flying season at Rijeka Airport officially opens on 15 April

The Ambassador of the Swiss Confederation pays his first official visit to Rijeka

Strategic Partnership Agreement between the Port of Rijeka and ICTSI, a Philippine-based company
Rijeka, 5 March 2011 The Strategic Partnership Agreement was signed in Rijeka between the Port of Rijake, i.e. its subsidiary Jadranska vrata, container terminal concessionary and International Container Terminal Services (ICTSI), a Philippine-based company. By realising this agreement, the modernisation of the Port of Rijeka is expected, as well as a significant increase in container traffic.

Co-operation between schools in Rijeka and Rome focussed on the subject of multiculturalism

This is the third such visit to Rijeka during which talks were primarily focused on further co-operation between the schools in these two cities, as well as on a project addressing the subject of multiculturalism.

The 15th edition of the Children's Carnival Parade

Second edition of the Adriatic slalom at Platak
Rijeka, 22 February 2011 It is expected that about one hundred slalom racers from about 20 European countries will take part in the Adriatic Slalom, a male ski race for the FIS European Cup, to be held on 8 March for the second time at the well-known ski resort of Rijeka, Platak. The Adriatic Slalom will be held under the auspices of the City of Rijeka and the Primorje - Gorski Kotar County. It has evolved from the traditional ski race the Adriatic Slalom, organised for the first time in 1933.

Five years of the activity of the Youth Hostel Rijeka
Rijeka, 21 February 2011 A solemn ceremony was held to mark five years of the activity of the Youth Hostel Rijeka. Since its opening the hostel has accommodated over 30 thousand guests from Croatia and abroad, who have realised almost 50 thousand overnights. The hostel is situated in a building in the residential area called Pećine, which the City of Rijeka, in its efforts to strengthen tourism in Rijeka, has assigned in favour of the Croatian Youth Hostel Association, which now uses it.

Rijeka, 10 February 2011 The Rijeka Carnival proceeds with numerous events – the 20th edition of the jubilee masked car rally Pariz – Bakar will be held on 19 February, from 11 February on the Karolina Riječka pier a large tent will be raised where many musicians will entertain the guests, during weekends costumed people will look forward to the balls organised at Zamet and Pašac, and already traditionally, within the Rijeka Carnival, the Octane Ball and the Ball of the Rotary Club will be held.

Internationally recognised prevention programme in schools in Rijeka
Rijeka, 8 February 2011 The City of Rijeka will co-finance PATHS -RASTEM, internationally recognised universal prevention programme intended for risky behaviour among children. The programme will be implemented in ten elementary schools in Rijeka and in two kindergartens. Furthermore, the City will finance the preparation of the project aimed at improving the quality of life of disabled people, which could be financed under the IPA programme – Adriatic Cross-border Co-operation of the European Union.

Rijeka mayor signed the charter ensuring accessibility to public places for disabled people
Rijeka, 9 February 2011 At the annual Assembly of the Association of Cities of the Republic of Croatia held on 9 February in Zagreb, the mayors and vice mayors of 19 cities signed the Charter ensuring accessibility to public places for disabled people. The signing of the Charter expresses determination to remove the existing barriers and promote accessibility to public places for disabled people, as well as, by applying systematic measures, readiness to support the creation of an environment in which public places, services and communications, to the largest possible degree, will be available for all the inhabitants of Croatian cities.

From 15 April Ryanair will fly to Rijeka Airport
Rijeka, 3 February 2011 The City of Rijeka, the Primorje-Gorski Kotar County, the Tourist Board of the City of Rijeka and the Tourist Board of the Kvarner region have signed an agreement on financing the promotion of Kvarner on the website of Ryanair, a low-cost airline company. As announced by the representative of Ryanair, starting from 15 April, this airline carrier will connect Rijeka Airport with London and Stockholm.

The initiative aimed at establishing friendly co-operation with Novi Sad
Rijeka, 2 February 2011 At the City Hall of Novi Sad, the mayor of Novi Sad Igor Pavličić and the mayor of Rijeka Vojko Obersnel have signed a Letter of Intent, within the initiative aimed at formally establishing friendly co-operation between the two cities. Mayor Vojko Obersnel accepted the invitation to participate in the celebration on 1 February, when the city of Novi Sad celebrates its day.

Rijeka, 2 February 2011 In the period starting from 9 February until the end of November at the Centre for Technical Culture Rijeka, citizens of all age groups may attend a free training course providing PC and internet basics. The training course includes 36 lessons, from an introduction to information technology and Windows basics through Google tools, e-mail and Skype up to photo and video processing.

Rijeka, 27 January 2011 The City of Rijeka, together with several other European cities, has become a partner included in the project "E-government for you" worth EUR 4.8 million, co-financed by the EU. The project is aimed at speeding up e-service delivery to the socially disadvantaged categories of citizens, removing the barriers that prevent access to the internet and e-services and providing information technology at home and in the communities of the socially disadvantaged.

Support for Ryanair flights at Rijeka Airport
Rijeka, 25 January 2010 Aiming to bring low-cost airline company Ryanair to Rijeka Airport, and increase airport passenger transport, the City of Rijeka, in co-operation with its partners, will co-finance marketing activities of this airline carrier. The beginning of the 28th edition of the Rijeka Carnival
Rijeka, 18 January 2010 The raising of carnival flags has marked the beginning of the fifth season in Rijeka – the 28th edition of the Rijeka Carnival. Fancy dressed people will "officially" take over power in the city on Friday, 21 January, and numerous traditional events will see its grand finale on 6 March during the International Carnival Parade. This year's edition of the Carnival that proceeds under the carnival motto "Be whoever you want to be!" this year is also promoted by a bus of the utility company "Autotrolej", on this occasion suitably painted.
