Awarded the prize "Ivo Kalina" for 2009

Rijeka, 11 May 2010
The solemn ceremony of awarding the visual art prize Ivo Kalina for 2009 took place at the City Hall and was awarded to Ana Glažar, Nika Rukavina, Phillippe Murphy, Alys Owen, Alice Briggs and Željko Marinković for the exhibition titled VIA held at the Gallery "Kortil" in the period from 4 to 15 September 2009.

Ervin Dubrović, Vojko Obersnel, Ana Glažar and Nika Rukavina Ana Glažar and Nika Rukavina received the award presented by the mayor of the City of Rijeka, Vojko Obersnel and by Ervin Dubrović, director of the City Museum and a member of the professional jury that assesses the received proposals competing for the artistic prize Ivo Kalina.
Before awarding the prize mayor Vojko Obersnel expressed his satisfaction because the prize continued to live, becoming a relevant indicator valuating the artists' work. The multimedia project started by the young artists at "Kortil", during the Venice Biennale, is a quality connection between the artists from South-Eastern Europe and those from Western Europe, which is a definite indicator that art doest not know any borders, said the mayor. He emphasised that the prize was not by case titled according to Ivo Kalina, artist to whom Croatian art owes a lot, thus in June of this year at the Gallery "Kortil" on the initiative of Mrs. Anita Kalina the exhibition "Ivo Kalina" will be opened.
The exhibition VIA presents the works created in the course of co-operation lasting for two years and a half between the artists Ana Glažar, Nika Rukavina, Phillippe Murphy, Alys Owen, Alice Briggs and Željko Marinković started during the Venice Biennale. The common sense of one's own marginal position, position of young artists that are still waiting for their momentum, the sense of not belonging, individuals opposing to the system that join together for common action, is the key to the comprehension of this exhibition's theme.
The visual art prize "Ivo Kalina" is awarded to the best exhibition in the visual arts in the field of contemporary art held in the course of the year in galleries and other public places in the territory of the city of Rijeka. The prize is awarded either to the best independent exhibition or to the best author's exhibition conception. The prize consists of a particular recognition in writing and a monetary award to the gross amount of HRK 20,000.00.
