With the final proposal of the City of Rijeka Master Plan, which is in the phase of being adopted, the whole zone, the Kantrida swimming pool complex being its part, is designated for sport and recreation. The intention is to create a sustained sports-recreational seafront, a new zone of citizen interest due to its attractions and contents. The whole space will become a new town seafront promenade, with recreation, catering, service, entertainment, commercial and other facilities, of interest for the citizens of Rijeka and also the whole County.
The reconstruction of the football stadium into an athletic one is planned, next to which it would be possible to build a range of sport facilities connected with water sports (rowing, sailing, diving…) but also sports that require condition training, such as boxing, judo, karate, wrestling, weight-lifting and similar.
The seafront promenade would join all the contents and potentially enable a future connection of the seafront space of the towns of Rijeka and Opatija.
Towards the west there is the Kantrida sports marina, a dry marina programme with additional contents, playgrounds for recreation, garage and parking spaces, while next to the swimming pool hall and the very seaside, part of the zone intended for the beach, play, entertainment and recreation with a range of catering, service and commercial facilities. The space south of the swimming pool, with its terraces follows the configuration of the ground and connects the seafront promenade with the swimming pools and the accompanying facilities. Spaces of an open character are planned to be built on these terraces: locker rooms for beach users, toilets and showers, catering, service and commercial facilities… The building of garage and parking facilities is planned on the north of the square, where one can enter the swimming pool complex. On its upper surface, at the level of Istarska ulica, it would function as the entrance square for coaches and means of public transport. From this landing, by means of sideway-vertical staircases, one would come to the space of the main entrance to the swimming pool complex. A garage facility next to the swimming pool space would be connected by a pedestrian communication with the secondary garage object, located to the north of the dry marina programme.
A detailed project of this zone is being made. According to the existing draft of the detailed project, a preliminary discussion is planned to take place in October, while the public discussion would be held in November of this year. Eventually, the detailed plan of the Sports and Recreation Zone Kantrida, according to the dynamic plan, would be passed and adopted towards the end of the year 2003. After that, the excerpts of the plan and from the land registry could be obtained and the laying out into plots made in order to obtain the building permit (March 2004).
PRELIMINARY PROJECT OF SWIMMING POOL HALL
The concept of the project has been to integrate the whole complex into the landscape and the natural beauty of the area. The created object – the indoor swimming pool, would have to meet all current and development needs of the town’s sports programme as well as enable the holding of major and most challenging sports manifestations. At the same time the swimming pool becomes an interest zone, a sports and recreation zone. The intention has been to connect the seaside beachfront with the inner land and to make the beachfront more accessible and acceptable for citizens.
The indoor swimming pool is shaped and coloured in such a way as to integrate as much as possible into the surrounding landscape. Because of this the roof construction has been divided in order to minimise the object’s mass and enable indirect light. By means of sideway-indirect daylight the cost of maintenance is lowered while the balance with the existing vegetation and the natural beauties of the environment achieved.
The main entrance space – the atrium, is the only way for the users of both big swimming pools to reach locker rooms and service facilities. It enables the view of the planned and the existing swimming pool as well as the view of the sea. Catering and service facilities are positioned in the central tract over which it is possible to get to the outer terraces. The sliding front and roof plates also enable the view of the Kvarner Bay (Kvarnerski zaljev) and of the access road. The ticket office, a shopping centre for necessities, club premises, meeting rooms and premises necessary for the running of the complex, all are situated close to the entrance.
