At the beginning of 2007, the delegation of the City of Rijeka made an official visit to Monte Negro. The emphasis in their discussions was placed primarily on cultural cooperation among cultural institutions. Significant cooperation was established through the mediation by the National Community of Montenegrins of Primorsko-Goranska County, precisely with Cetinje.
At the meeting held on 30th March 2010, the Committee on Intercity and International Cooperation in principle supported this cooperation, while the City Council at the meeting held on 15th July 2010 brought the Resolution on Concluding the Agreement of Friendly Cooperation between Rijeka and the Capital Cetinje.
While thanking the National Community of Montenegrins of Primorsko-Goranska County for launching the initiative for the establishment of friendly relations, the mayor, Mr Obersnel said that the memory was still fresh of the pleasant stay and hospitality from Cetinje two years before. The cooperation between the two cities represents a stimulus for the citizens, especially members of national minorities, as is the case with the National Community of Montenegrins, to establish cooperation through various activities such as sports, culture and economy. Such cooperation had been abundant so far, and it would continue, said Mr Obersnel, emphasizing that he was looking forward to the next visit to Cetinje.
Milovan Jovanković, the mayor of Cetinje, said that he had an extremely agreeable assignment to confirm with his signature the successful cooperation started four years ago. “The support for the Agreement by emigration is extremely important. So the Days of Cetinje were held in Rijeka, after which there was the exhibition “Mažuranićevi Dani” (“Mažuranić Days”) held in Cetinje, which will be followed by the exhibition by Vlaho Bukovac. All this confirms that the cooperation between cities and districts should precede the cooperation between countries. I am glad that the Days of Rijeka will soon be held in Cetinje”, said Mr Janković.
The delegation of Cetinje, present for the signing of the Agreeent, consisted of Mr Batrić Ivanović, the Secretaty of the Secretariat of Economy, Development and Finances, Ms Svetlana Vicković, the main administrator, and Ms Ranka Jovanović, the mayor’s head of staff.
On behalf of the City of Rijeka, the signing was attended by Ms Dorotea Pešić Bukovac, the president of the Rijeka City Council, Mr Željko Jovanović and Mr Miroslav Matešić, deputy mayors, Ms Ksenija Linić, the head of City Administration Office, as well as the representatives of the National Community of Montenegrins of Primorsko-Goranska County.
