The 14th edition of the Children's Carnival Procession

Rijeka, 6 February 2010
For the fourteenth time in a row, the most playful and engaging manifestation of the Rijeka Carnival – Children's Carnival Procession was held with participation of preschool and school-aged children. Their number every year clearly shows what we may expect of it in the future. In this year's edition of the carnival procession 76 carnival groups took part with 5.208 children whose fanciful ideas chased away threatening rain clouds.

Cheerful group from Matulji Immediately before the beginning of the costumed procession, in the municipal building the mayor of the City of Rijeka Vojko Obersnel received the representatives of carnival groups, who arrived from across the Primorje-Gorski Kotar County and the Lika-Senj County, from Croatian hinterland (Strmec) and abroad – from Slovenia (Ljubljana, Preserje), Serbia (Pančevo, Šabac) and Montenegro (Herceg Novi.

They all started from Delta In front of a numerous audience, children from Rijeka and their guests showed what imagination can create, so that on Korzo jolly vegetable gardens, bananas, pumpkins, and small roses grew, then little snails, frogs, bees, parrots, butterflies and zebras passed by followed by numerous fantastic creatures – little dragoons, extraterrestrials, elves, wizards and witches.

The audience could see little postmen, clowns, colourful sweets and chess figures, and several groups were inspired by motives deriving from our heritage, so they were costumed as dairy-women, the City Tower and they reminded the audience how it had looked like when the Glagolitic scrip was in use.

The carnival procession took a bit shorter route from Delta through Korzo towards the Karolina Riječka pier, where under the pavilion an entertainment programme was organised, led by Vale and D.J.Tomy.
