The Croatian pavilion for the International Architecture Exhibition in the port of Rijeka

Rijeka, 23 August 2010
On the occasion of the presentation of Croatian authors at the 12th edition of the International Architecture Exhibition – the Venice Biennale – a floating pavilion has been constructed in the Kraljevica shipyard. The pavilion is situated on a barge, made of 32 tonnes of welded wire networks in about 40 layers. The citizens of Rijeka may visit it since the pavilion is moored to the Karolina Riječka Pier from Saturday until its departure for Venice.

The floating pavilion moored to the Karolina Riječka Pier The floating pavilion has been constructed on an existing barge sized 10 x 20 x 3 m. Within the steel network cargo, there is a space formed by different layer contours, creating the main space and framing views towards the outside world. Almost invisible from the distance, when observed from near or inside the pavilion, the structure of different density steel networks oscillates in transparency, thus forming fantastic visual effects and creating a unique space experience.

Fifteen architects gathered on this project are certainly among the most prominent Croatian architects of today. Owing to their exceptionally successful architectural work they are recognised on the global architecture scene, whereby Croatian architecture, on the whole, is also recognised. They are gathered here in the workgroup that has realised the common project which will present the Republic of Croatia at the Venice Biennale. Saša Begović, Marko Dabrović, Igor Franić, Tanja Grozdanić, Petar Mišković, Silvije Novak, Veljko Oluić, Helena Paver Njirić, Lea Pelivan, Toma Plejić, Goran Rako, Saša Randić, Turato Idis, Pero Vuković and Tonči Žarnić held more than twenty workgroup meetings and spent innumerable working hours preparing the production for the Biennale and surveying the construction of the barge at Kraljevica.

The production commissioner, architect Leo Modrčin, proposed the project consisting of a floating pavilion on a barge as a simple solution to the question of the exhibition space of Croatian art and architecture at the Venice Biennale. At the beginning the project was conceived as a symposium of multiple proposals, however the architects themselves transformed it into a rare and dynamic example of common work and a unique project that was immediately realised. The achieved result undoubtedly can be evaluated as a unique and encouraging architectonic work.

Transparent structure In the Croatian exhibition space, the project course will be presented through arranged empty cardboard boxes on which pavilion project and construction documentation in the 280 years old Kraljevica shipyard will be displayed and a view to the pavilion's voyage across the Adriatic. Background music will evoke the realisation of the pavilion in the environment of the shipyard. Further to the display of the barge's empty cargo, palettes with project placards – publication for visitors - will be displayed.

This production of the Croatian architects is a project of the Ministry of Culture. The project organisation is entrusted to the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art in Rijeka, supported by the City of Rijeka, the largest Croatian port where most project sponsors tied to shipping and shipbuilding activities operate. The main sponsors of the Croatian architects' presence at the Venice Biennale are the Kraljevica Shipyard (construction of the pavilion), the "3.maj" Shipyard (barge) and the company "Adriatic Maritime Services" (towing) from Rijeka. The sponsor the exhibition at the Arsenale is the company AVC from Zagreb.
