"The Rijeka Summer Nights" opened with a spectacular ceremony

A spectacular opening ceremony and the performance of Beethoven's "Ode to Joy" by the soloists, choir and orchestra of the Croatian National Theatre Ivan Zajc amid the port of Rijeka, on a floating pontoon, between the Karolina Riječka Quay, the waterfront Boduli and the passenger terminal, marked the beginning of "The Rijeka Summer Nights". The final part of Beethoven's magnificent 9th symphony was accompanied by a flag-raising ceremony and fireworks.

Opening ceremony of the Rijeka Summer Nights The programme of the Rijeka Summer Nights manifestation this year is divided into three parts, consisting of drama, musical and special programmes. For the first time the festival programme will include a performance for children "The Trsat Castle".

The musical part of the programme includes many concerts, mainly beneath the open sky and a new ambient opera performance. A new location, the beach just below the former Park Hotel, will be filled with captivating sounds of music performed by several top-notch chamber orchestra and several great soloists, from the international violoncello star Stefan Milenkovich, the internationally renowned guitarist and lute player Edin Karamazov to the most famous young Croatian instrumentalists who receive the confirmation of their exceptional skills through international prizes and performances such as Marco Graziani, Stjepan Hauser, Petar Kovačić and the Rijeka jazz musician, guitarist Darko Jurković. A pearl of an opera, one of the most beautiful examples of veristic opera, „Cavalleria rusticana“ by Mascagni will experience its ambient performance on square "Trg Grivica" in front of St. Vitus' cathedral.

Opening ceremony of the Rijeka Summer Nights The traditional literature evening "Writers Beneath the Stars" will be held in the premises of the Astronomy Centre Rijeka. In addition to writers, this summer movies will gain their place under the stars as well. Yet another novelty is in issue, namely the programme "Movie Beneath the Stars" owing to which the film media becomes a part of the Rijeka Summer Nights.

The Festival will be closed on 24 July with "The Water Ballet" at the swimming-pool complex of Kantrida.
