Description

The project contains coordinated activities aimed at a common vision of the development of recognizable and unique cultural heritage of the urban area while encouraging tourism development based on the principles of sustainability.

According to the Development Strategy of the Urban Agglomeration of Rijeka for the period 2016-2020, the necessity to invest in cultural infrastructure is the same as the necessity to create new forms of cultural offer. Although the buildings are of significant cultural value, investment in maintenance of single cultural goods has been insufficient.

The transformation of underutilised cultural heritage sites into spaces with new purposes will make the entire area of the Rijeka Urban Agglomeration more attractive for citizens, visitors and entrepreneurs, thus, contributing to increase employment and income, along with the planned improvement of cultural heritage and its infrastructural parts.

The project includes 13 physical locations of cultural and historical heritage in the area of the Rijeka Urban Agglomeration, characteristic of each local area, which together form an integral product of the cultural offer.

The project envisages an integrated approach to the mentioned sites, but also to the entire heritage of the Rijeka Urban Agglomeration through its mapping, composing the narrative, the development of interpretation plans, joint presentation infrastructure, a brand, a promotion plan and strategic management. The infrastructure that will be renewed or built will be, primarily, intended to revive interests of local and wider population, while enhancing the attractiveness of these sites for tourism, especially for people interested in historical and cultural tourism. Also, the project has a significant educational character for children in primary and secondary schools with regard to history and literature school curricula.

The implementation of these components will result in the creation of new cultural and tourist products based on physical infrastructure of cultural and historical heritage and other contents that will connect physical contents established owing to the project, and also other points within the Rijeka Urban Agglomeration based on cultural heritage.

In the future, it is predicted that other contents of cultural and historical heritage will be included, since the basic interpretive project message “Let’s connect with heritage” presents a rich diversity of heritage, lifestyles and cultural identities of the Rijeka Urban Agglomeration.
