The evaluation of the implementation of civic education in primary schools in Rijeka has shown that pupils positively respond to civic education classes, and what is particularly important, they have changed their attitudes towards rights and duties, cooperation, respect for others and tolerance towards others who are different. These words were said during the meeting of the Board of Mayor.

In school year 2016/2017, the City of Rijeka experimentally introduced civic education as an extra-curricular activity in fifth grades, in six primary schools owned by the City. The implementation of this extracurricular activity continues this year in 22 elementary schools in Rijeka and it includes almost 400 students.
To determine its success, the experimental year of implementation was assessed by the students of the Department of Pedagogy of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, Rijeka, led by their mentors Bojana Ćulum and Nena Rončević. The results of the survey have been presented to the media today.
Rijeka mayor Vojko Obersnel pointed out that that survey had shown that the introduction of civic education was a good decision, which was proved by huge interest in its introduction according to the Rijeka model, shown by other centres. The City of Rijeka has already signed an agreement pursuant to which the City of Rijeka will assign the materials contained in the textbook free of charge to the City of Sisak, destined to pupils attending fifth and sixth grades of primary school and supporting materials destined to teachers. Soon an agreement should be signed with the Primorje – Gorski Kotar County. Interest was also shown by the Istrian County, the City of Čakovec and some other centres.

Rijeka has achieved excellent tourist results
While presenting the tourist results of Rijeka from 2014 to 2017, acting head of the Department of Entrepreneurship, Vlasta Linić said that tourism witnessed a continuous growth. Overnight stays in 2017, reached 334,463, and were up by 92.71% when compared to 2014.
In accordance with data submitted by the Financial Agency, overall annual income from tourism in 2016, amounted to HRK 735 million, it was up by almost 20% when compared to 2014 and the number of employed in the tourism industry also went up.
Over the last three years, the City invested in tourism development HRK 4.2 million, by co-financing the promotion of the Kvarner region as an airline destination and the development of Rijeka as a cruise destination.
While expressing his satisfaction with the tourist results mayor Obersnel pointed out that data indicated that regarding the tourism development of Rijeka, that until recently had not been perceived as a tourist destination, a lot had been done. The city’s tourism image will be supplemented by a number of investments – the construction of the resort at Kostabela has been initiated, the hotel company Jadran announced the refurbishment of the hotels Neboder and Park, and over the next couple of years the idea of the construction of a hotel within the Benčić complex should be realised.
