At the beginning of March 2021, Rijeka was declared European City of Sports in 2022. The title is a confirmation of the city’s sports orientation to date, and also an opportunity for the city holding this title to further develop its sports orientation in the year of declaration.

Rijeka European City Of Sports 2022 The title European City of Sports is awarded by ACES Europe (European Capitals and Cities of Sport Federation), a non-profit organisation based in Brussels and an official partner of the European Commission in the European Sports Week. Titles are awarded according to the principles of responsibility and ethics, improving the quality of life, psychophysical well-being and complete integration in the community.

The City of Rijeka presented its candidacy in July 2020 in the category of medium-sized cities from 25,000 to 500,000 inhabitants. The criteria for winning the title were sports infrastructure, recreation and sports programmes for citizens of all ages, encouraging sports practicing, experience in organising prestigious international sports competitions, organising competitive sports and clubs, and financing sports.

Among the ideas that the Rijeka Sports Association will try to realise next year are Sports radio, which would broadcast sports news in three languages, Croatian, Italian and English, and a kind of House of Sports in which the history of sports in Rijeka would be presented.
