Having upgraded the system in the Rijeka surroundings, the utility company “Čistoća” continues the implementation of the individual municipal waste management system in Rijeka as well.

Within system upgrade, all users will get their own waste containers, whereby enabling control of their own waste, preventing unauthorised use of containers and it is expected that the amount of separately collected recyclable fractions will increase, while increasing the quality of separate waste types.

Three containers are distributed free of charge

Individual containers in the territory of the city of Rijeka will be distributed free of charge. Three containers are distributed: green for mixed municipal waste, blue for paper and cardboard and yellow for plastic, metal and multilayer packaging. The size of containers is determined by the number of household members.

As the distribution of containers proceeds in several phases, it is important to know that there are two categories of buildings that differ according to the manner in which containers are distributed:

  1. family houses – buildings with up to 3 apartments
  2. condominiums – buildings with 4 or more apartments

Distribution of containers to family houses

Users living in family houses and buildings with less than four apartments will receive a notice at their home address about the date when individual containers will be distributed with information on the number and the container size.

Municipal waste will be collected in standardized containers of a capacity of 80, 120 and 240 litres.

All containers will be distributed by employees of Čistoća according to the distribution plan and programme, if users are not at home on the determined distribution date, they will be able to collect them at the central recycling centre Mihačeva draga.

Users are required to take care of their containers and place them at the collection and emptying place on the days of hauling. The same applies as when distributing containers, users will be timely informed via a notice sent to their home address about the beginning of use of individual containers, the place they can be taken over and emptied and on the exact hauling day of mixed municipal and recyclable waste.

Distribution of containers in condominiums

Users living in condominiums with four or more apartments will get common containers and will be informed about everything by the co-owners’ authorised representatives.

Municipal waste will be collected in common containers having large capacities of 1,100, 3,000 to 5,000 litres.

For each condominium, in accordance with the number of users and the number of family members, the necessary volume of waste containers and the number of collections will be determined.

The employees of Čistoća, in cooperation with the competent services of the City of Rijeka, will then determine whether the containers can be placed inside the building in a predicted place or in a locked place outside the building or whether a place must be provided in public areas by placing either prefabricated containers or semi-underground containers.

Fewer number of hauling also means a lower price

The user decides how many times a month the green container for mixed municipal waste will be emptied and the cost of the bill will depend on it. Only the hauling of mixed municipal waste is payable, while the hauling of paper and plastic, metal and multilayer packaging is free of charge.

By correctly separating the types of recyclable waste that can be recycled and used, users directly influence a reduction in the quantity of mixed municipal waste, and therefore the final amount of the bill. By all means, it is expected that it would encourage a significant increase in the quantity and quality of recyclable types of waste.

How are we going to know to whom a container belongs?

All containers are marked with a barcode and are then entered into the information system and attached to files of every user.

While emptying them, containers are electronically identified, user code, volume and the number of collections are recorded, and data is sent to the system.

Control of containers

During the emptying of individual containers, a correct disposal of mixed municipal waste and the types of recyclable waste are monitored, namely whether each type of waste is adequately separated and whether the types of unauthorised waste are disposed of in containers, which is subject to penalties.

Other services available to users in the territory of the city of Rijeka

For other types of household waste, users will still have access to specialised containers for glass, textiles, clothing and footwear, as well as a range of services for the disposal of special types of waste.

When it comes to special types of waste, users have access to the recycling yards Mihačeva draga, Pehlin and Joža Vlahović and mobile recycling plants.

In the entire territory in which the municipal Čistoća operates, users can dispose of up to 2 m³ of bulky or green pruning waste in their private gardens on request, provided that they have to fill in the prescribed forms.

It is important to note the possibility of free use of Riperaj when necessary to repair small appliances and articles in order to prevent the generation of waste.

By reusing products and adequately separating waste as one of the conditions for preparing for recycling, users actively participate in the creation of a sustainable circular economy.
