The activities of the Biobank consist in: taking, identifying and defining the nature and origin of biological samples and their preservation. The Biobank was founded with the aim of studying the following diseases: breast cancer, colorectal cancer, melanoma, head and neck cancers, lung cancer, gynecologic cancers, urinary tract cancers, male reproductive system cancers and biological samples within research into spontaneous and medically induced abortions.

The activity of the Biobank adds a scientific, preventive and applied value to the City of Rijeka because it complies with national and local strategies that have as its final goal the foundation of the Translational Medical Research Center. Translational research connects discoveries that derive from basic, clinical or population research and put them in clinical practice in order to improve human health and health care, and improve knowledge transfer in the reverse direction from clinical practice towards research.
