In the event that an imminent threat, a catastrophe or large misfortune is declaired the Protection and Salvage Command for the territory of Rijeka is activated – professional, operational and coordination body that offers professional assistance and prepares protection and salvage actions. Command members, headed by the mayor, are called, as a rule, via the County Centre 112.

In addition to the Command, the operational forces of protection and salvage include:

• Public Fire Brigade
• Voluntary firefighters’ associations “Sušak-Rijeka” and “Drenova”
• Civil Protection Brigade
• Croatian Mountain Rescue Service  – Rijeka station
• City Red Cross Association Rijeka
