The Administration Department of Education of the Primorje-Gorski Kotar County is responsible for the procedure of the enrolment of a child in the first grade of primary school in the territory of the city Rijeka, which every year brings in a plan for the enrolment in the first grade of primary school for the next school year.

Children who have reached the age of six by 1 April of the current year are enrolled in the first grade of primary school. Enrolment is carried out in primary schools closest to the child’s place of residence.

Having completed the application procedure, the Administration Department of Education establishes a list of school children who are obliged to start school and informs parents about the obligation and the manner in which the physical and mental condition of a child is to be examined, whereby determining the child’s ability to start his/her primary education.

Under certain conditions, parents may request child’s early enrolment in the first grade of primary school as well as postponement of enrolment, in respect of which the Administration Department of Education takes a decision.
