The vision of Rijeka as a city that wants to become a city of knowledge, new technology and a city of youth has been recognised for many years. Therefore the City of Rijeka pays great attention to various programmes dedicated to children and youth, it follows and encourages in particular the progress made by gifted pupils and youth who are a creative potential of the city of Rijeka. In line with this, the City awards scholarships to gifted pupils and students, and co-finances various programmes and projects in which successful students and young people take part, which fundamental goal is to encourage talents. Among numerous activities, the City awards public recognition to pupils and their mentors who achieve the best results in national and international competitions, gatherings and reviews.
Competitions, gatherings and reviews of extracurricular activities of elementary and secondary school pupils take place in accordance with the programme brought in by the Education Agency and the Agency for Vocational Education in the second semester of every school year, and they begin with school competitions in January. The most successful pupils take part in competitions at county level, and the best of them take part in competitions and gatherings at national level.

Receptions for pupils of the generation
The City of Rijeka organises a solemn reception for pupils of the generation of elementary schools who during their eight-year education, in addition to exceptional success at school and exemplary behaviour, have proved their mettle in many extracurricular, out of school and humanitarian activities and in enhancing their school’s reputation.
Prizes of the City of Rijeka for special achievements gained by pupils who take part in national and international competitions, meetings and festivals
The City of Rijeka has also introduced prizes for special achievements gained by pupils who take part in national and international competitions, meetings and festivals. They relate to annual prizes, recognition in writing and plaques. The prizes are awarded to pupils and educational personnel who prepared pupils for competitions, meetings or festivals –primary and secondary school mentors.
