Since academic year 2010/2011 the City of Rijeka has been awarding scholarships to students residing in the territory of the city of Rijeka who study for professions in short supply, on the basis of data collected from the Croatian Employment Service and the State Administration Office and the needs of the city institutions. It emanates that this programme is beneficial to young people who find a job in this way, while the City meets the needs for professional profiles.

The mayor determines the number of scholarships, the monthly amount of scholarships and the professions in short supply for every academic year pursuant to the Decision on scholarships for university students who study for professions in short supply, where the Criteria for selecting the scholarship holders of the City of Rijeka form its integral part, as well as on the basis of data collected from the Croatian Employment Service and the State Administration Office and the needs in the city institutions.

The competition for awarding scholarships, as a rule, is published at the beginning of the academic year. Each candidate is assigned a certain number of points, in accordance with success achieved during education, the year of study enrolled and his/her social status. The candidate list is drawn up in accordance with the realised overall points.

The Decision on awarding scholarships is brought in by the mayor who signs scholarship agreements with students for the whole period of higher education on condition that during this period they must fulfil all the prescribed conditions.

At the beginning of every school/academic year “the old” scholarship holders shall prove that they have met all the requirements contained in the scholarship agreement, while the Scholarship Commission shall review the submitted documentation, namely evidence that all the requirements have been met.

The implementation of the competition procedure, scoring and ranking of candidates as well as the activities relating to scholarship awards are carried out by the Commission for awarding scholarships to students who study for professions in short supply.

The scholarship agreements signed pursuant to the old Decision on awarding scholarships, shall remain in force until the expiry of the term for which they have been entered into, namely until the termination of the scholarship agreement.

The monthly scholarship for students who study for professions in short supply amounts to EUR 146.00, and it is assigned annually over a nine-month period.
