On \u00a024 March 2016, Rijeka was awarded the prestigious title of European Capital of Culture 2020 for its programme \u201cThe Port of Diversity\u201d, aimed at creating a city of culture and creativity for Europe and future. The selection programme took almost two years and it was organised through the Ministry of Culture.<\/p>\n
The candidature of Rijeka for ECoC 2020 is one of the most important strategic projects of the Draft Cultural Development Strategy of the City of Rijeka 2013-2020.<\/p>\n
The draft decision whereby presenting the candidature of the City of Rijeka for the title of European Capital of Culture 2020 was adopted by the Council of the City of Rijeka in April 2013.<\/p>\n
The City of Rijeka presented its candidature for European Capital of Culture 2020 aiming to create numerous cultural programmes of high artistic quality, create cultural programmes with a strong European dimension and in transnational cooperation, include a wide range of stakeholders and citizens as programme participants and an audience, improve cultural infrastructure, develop the skills, capacity and governance of the cultural sector, encourage partnership and cooperation with other sectors, promote the city and its cultural programmes and enhance the international orientation and visibility of the city of Rijeka and the whole region.<\/p>\n
The programme aims to enrich the European cultural diversity, celebrate the cultural relations that unify the Europeans, create a meeting-place for the Europeans coming from different backgrounds, promote their multiculturalism, multilingualism and mutual understanding and encourage the feeling of European citizenship. All the studies have shown that the European Capital of Culture project is an exceptional occasion for urban renewal, an occasion to enhance the city\u2019s international profile and improve its image as seen through the eyes of its inhabitants, improve the vitality of the city\u2019s cultural life, its international visibility and tourist results.<\/p>\n
