{"id":11885,"date":"2021-12-09T09:26:50","date_gmt":"2021-12-09T08:26:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.rijeka.hr\/en\/?p=11885"},"modified":"2021-12-10T13:31:13","modified_gmt":"2021-12-10T12:31:13","slug":"sense-play-rijeka","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rijeka.hr\/en\/sense-play-rijeka\/","title":{"rendered":"In spring, the cultural quarter Ben\u010di\u0107 will get an artistic installation dedicated to games"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A former industrial complex, known among the locals as <em>Be<\/em><em>n\u010di\u0107<\/em>, is slowly becoming Rijeka\u2019s own \u201ccultural quarter\u201d. Going back to the eighteenth century, the complex was the site of a sugar refinery, repurposed first into a tobacco processing plant, and then again into an engine factory, <em>R<\/em><em>ikard Ben\u010di\u0107<\/em>, finally closing its doors only in 1995. What was known as H-Building from the tobacco-producing days is now home to the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art; the administrative spaces of the erstwhile sugar refinery have become the City Museum of Rijeka, now housing its brand-new permanent collection; and the so-called T-Structure from tobacco time will shortly be the Rijeka Civic Library. The fourth object within the <em>Ben\u010di\u0107<\/em> complex, formerly known as the Brick House, was opened to the public in March 2021 as the Children\u2019s House. Designed by a local architect, Sa\u0161a Randi\u0107, it is the first of its kind in Croatia: a gorgeously decorated, joyous space that fosters creativity, explicitly constructed for children.<\/p>\n<p>Anticipating large visits of the youngest residents not only of the city, but the whole region, has provided inspiration for yet another interesting spatial installation in <em>Ben\u010di\u0107<\/em>. The international project, \u201c<strong>Sense of Play<\/strong>\u201d is a cooperative project of <strong>DeltaLab<\/strong> \u2013 Centre for Urban Transition, Architecture and Urbanism of the <strong>University of Rijeka<\/strong>, with the Norwegian architecture and design studio <strong>Sn\u00f8hetta<\/strong>, and Design and Architecture Norway \u2013 <strong>DOGA<\/strong>, with the support of the <strong>City of Rijeka<\/strong>. The project envisions an art installation for children that applies the principles of inclusive design and is thematically dedicated to play and exuberant creativity, entitled \u201cSense of Balance.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_11890\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" class=\"wp-image-11890 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rijeka.hr\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/12\/Osjeti-igru-foto-Karlo-\u010cargonja-3-600x400-600x400.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">MORANA MATKOVI\u0106, RENATO STANKOVI\u0106, JULIAN PREISS AND JORUNN SANNES<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The installation was designed by the architectural studio Sn\u00f8hetta, drawing on cultural and field research of two creative workshops that included local cooperative organizations, Association of Architects Rijeka, Rijeka Civic Library, the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, and Art-kino Croatia. Sn\u00f8hetta is an international studio for architectural design, landscape architecture, interior and brand design, headquartered in Oslo, with studios in New York, San Francisco, Innsbruck, Paris, Hong Kong, and Adelaide. In its 30 years of existence, Sn\u00f8hetta has designed prominent public and cultural objects, such as the Norwegian National Opera and Ballet in Oslo, a new library in Alexandria, Egypt, the first underwater restaurant in Europe, even Norwegian monetary bills. \u201cSense of Balance\u201d will be Sn\u00f8hetta\u2019s first project in Croatia.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking of the project, <strong>Arrate Arizaga<\/strong>, the spokesperson for Sn\u00f8hetta said:<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cSense of Balance is an installation inspired by a child&#8217;s drawing, colorful and abstract. Sn\u00f8hetta is very fond of collaborating with DeltaLab and DOGA to create this engaging piece. A free and intricated piece that refers to Rijeka\u2019s rich history as a cultural melting pot and invites everyone to imagine their own interpretation.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Although envisioned to be part of Rijeka 2020 \u2013 European Capital of Culture, the realization of the project had to be postponed to early 2021 due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Based on the knowledge and experience exchange between Croatian and Norwegian partners and cooperating institutions, the general design of the project was presented in September of 2021. The installation by Sn\u00f8hetta is set to be placed in Ben\u010di\u0107 Park, next to the new Rijeka Civic Library building, both of which were designed, along with the Children&#8217;s House, by architect Sa\u0161a Randi\u0107.
