Within the on-site visit to the Art Quarter \u201cBen\u010di\u0107\u201d, the participants, members of the Committee and representatives of the European Commission were acquainted with the EU projects “Revitalisation of the Ben\u010di\u0107 complex \u2013 Brick and T-buildings” and “Tourist Valorisation of Notable Industrial Heritage Monuments of Rijeka”.<\/p>\n

On behalf of the Administrative Department of Education, Culture, Sports and Youth, Ivan \u0160arar and representatives of the Rijeka City Museum and the Rijeka City Library, presented to the guests the programme of the Children’s House, the future contents of the City Library building and the display of the Sugar Refinery Palace.<\/p>\n

On that occasion, \u0160arar pointed out that with the imminent completion of the works in the Art Quarter \u201cBen\u010di\u0107\u201d, the ten-year cycle would end, initiated with the adoption of the Strategy for the Cultural Development of the City of Rijeka, and had continued with the implementation of the Rijeka – European Capital of Culture project.<\/p>\n

“The refurbishment of the Art Quarter \u201cBen\u010di\u0107\u201d represents the largest investment in cultural infrastructure since the independence of the Republic of Croatia and is one of the largest projects financed with EU funds,” said Ivan \u0160arar on behalf of the City of Rijeka. This investment is worth around EUR 50 million, part of it relates to two EU projects, and part also to the investment made by the City of Rijeka, for example, to refurbish the new HQ of the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art and for public landscaping.<\/p>\n

On behalf of the European Commission, Alida Liha Mateji\u010dek pointed out that the Commission appreciated and recognised the efforts made by the City of Rijeka in the implementation of EU projects in the Art Quarter \u201dBen\u010di\u0107\u201d. At the same time, she expressed her hope that those projects, when fully completed, would be beneficial not only for the local community, but also for a broader community.<\/p>\n
