The Grand Finale of the International Rijeka Carnival – the 33rd edition of the International Carnival Parade

Rijeka, 8 February 2016
The fifth season, i.e. carnival time, was brought to an end with a spectacular 33rd International Carnival Parade, by burning a strew effigy and returning the city keys. This year more than 10,000 fancy dressed people, divided in 110 carnival groups and 73 allegoric floats added to the atmosphere of tomfoolery in Rijeka.

Signed the Initiative for the establishment of friendly cooperation between Gdansk and Rijeka

Rijeka, 23 November 2015
The City of Rijeka hosted a reception for the delegation of the city of Gdansk, Poland who sojourn in Rijeka from 22 to 24 November 2015. During the reception, the Initiative was signed for the establishment of friendly cooperation between Gdansk and Rijeka, where both parties expressed their wish to further strengthen cooperation in the fields of culture and economy, and to connect the universities. The Baltic-Adriatic Transport Corridor is the link that connects the two cities – ports.

The City of Rijeka has received recognition for its "social calculator"

The City of Rijeka has received recognition for its project E-benefits, social programme of the City of Rijeka, the-so-called "social calculator". The recognition “Best Practice Certificate” was received in Maastricht (NL), by Ankica Perhat, head of the Department of Health and Social Welfare. This recognition is awarded on the basis of the European Public Sector Award which this year’s theme was “The Public Sector as Partner for a Better Society”.

“Easy Towns“ project partnership

From 20 to 21 October, the City of Rijeka took part in the initial conference of the “Easy Towns” project, held in Heist-op-den-Berg, Belgium. The “Easy Towns“ project is financed  under the EU “Europe for Citizens” programme. The total project value amounts to EUR 145,000, and project partners are: Vicenza (Italy), Heist-op-den-Berg (Belgium), L'Alfas del Pi (Spain), Pforzheim (Germany), Pula (Croatia), Šentjur (Slovenia), Gozo (Malta), Niepolomice (Poland), Craigavon (UK – Northern Ireland) and Rijeka.

The New Integrated Covenant of Mayors for Climate and Energy signed in Brussels by mayor Obersnel

Rijeka, 16 October 2015
Rijeka mayor Vojko Obersnel signed in Brussels an annex to the Covenant of Mayors whereby the City of Rijeka as a signatory to the European initiative relating to 3x20 goals by 2020 committed itself to taking measures with the aim of increasing energy efficiency and sustainable development. The new covenant is aimed at reducing CO2 emissions in the atmosphere by at least 40 % by 2030 and implementing the actual European protocols aimed at climate protection.

Deputy mayor Miroslav Matešić has been elected to the CIVITAS PAC – Political Advisory Committee of the Civitas network

During the annual Civitas conference held in Ljubljana, titled Civitas Forum – Sharing the City, the deputy mayor of the City of Rijeka Miroslav Matešić has been elected to the CIVITAS PAC (Political Advisory Committee). Within the conference, at the meeting of the Civinet Slovenia-Croatia network, the Management Committee has taken a decision whereby determining that starting from September 2016, for two years, Rijeka will host the head office of the Civinet Slovenia – Croatia network.

Call for proposals of programmes

With the KamovResidency Programme the City of Rijeka wishes to enable contemporary European and world creators to better understand artistic, cultural and social situation in Croatia - especially in Rijeka. At the same time, citizens of Rijeka will have access to the European and world art scenes. The residency programmes that will be financed or co-financed by the City Budget are residency programmes in the city of Rijeka for creative individuals from the fields of literature, visual and audiovisual arts, music, drama and dance, other performing arts, social sciences and humanities.The timetable of the Residency will be defined in consultation with the Programme Council and the applicant. A minimum stay is 15 days. The Call for proposals is ongoing.

All activities tied to the candidature will be published on this website to enable citizens to get acquainted with the project and provide a possibility to ask questions or send ideas and suggestions to the published contact e-mail address.

Adopted the City of Rijeka Development Strategy for the period 2014 – 2020

The Council of the City of Rijeka, adopted the City of Rijeka Development Strategy for the period 2014-2020, as proposed by mayor Vojko Obersnel. This document will mark the development of Rijeka over the next seven years, and its realisation has been estimated at HRK 22.5 billion.
