In the period from 16 to 22 September 2022, the City of Rijeka will mark the European Mobility Week, which promotes sustainable urban mobility, prevention of harmful gas emissions, and a better lifestyle and culture of living in urban areas. The City Department of Development, Urban Planning, Ecology and Land Management and the City Department of Health and Social Care participate in the organisation of the programme.

The European Mobility Week is a manifestation dedicated to sustainable mobility, which, with the financial and political support from the European Commission, has been held since 2002 in the period from 16 to 22 September. Three organisations, Eurocities, Energy Cities and Climate Alliance, play a key role in the coordination of activities and the promotion of the entire event, which represents an excellent platform for local authorities to achieve the following goals:

  • awareness-raising campaign about the harm to the environment and the quality of life of the existing mobility modes in cities,
  • promotion of initiatives and best practices related to sustainable urban mobility,
  • establishment of effective partnerships with local stakeholders,
  • emphasising the commitment of local authorities to the establishment of sustainable transport policies,
  • launching new long-term policies and permanent measures,
  • participation in the wider European campaign, sharing common goals with other participating cities.

The central theme of this year’s week is “Better Connections” while the slogan reads “Combine and move!

Given the challenges that life in the city presents to us, we create healthier and happier cities for everyone by our daily activities that reduce pollution and gas emissions that harm our climate. The goal is to promote healthier and more intelligent mobility modes in the city while at the same time we help reduce pollution by safe walking and cycling as active forms of movement and using public transport.

Active forms of transport, such as walking and riding a bicycle or scooter, do not produce emissions and make our heart and body healthy. Cities that promote walking and cycling are considered more attractive, less polluted and having a higher quality of life.

During the celebration of the European Mobility Week, the campaign titled “Rijeka in Motion” will be held, and as part of it, activities intended for people with disabilities will take place, organised by the Department of Health and Social Welfare with partners.
