The Urban Laboratory is part of the three-year EU project “Competence Centre for Smart Cities”, and is intended for all interested citizens who want to learn more about the project and participate in the testing and improvement of smart solutions and smart products developed through CEKOM for smart cities.

The CEKOM project for smart cities is the largest Croatian research and development project in the field of information and communication solutions. It is aimed at implementing the concept of a smart city in every segment of city life, and its unique goal is to raise the quality of life of Rijeka citizens.

17 private and public companies and three institutions for research and dissemination of knowledge co-operate on the project, which through 36 products within CEKOM develop solutions in order to improve the operation of public administration, utility companies, transport infrastructure and mobility and city security. The project leader is the company Smart Ri.

The urban laboratory is the final phase of the project, a physical and virtual place of interaction, an environment for exchanging ideas and proposals, and a platform for two-way communication with citizens as end users of new products and services developed through the project.

Through the Urban Laboratory, citizens can get to know the CEKOM project and try out all the new products and services developed through the project.

Additionally, through the Urban Laboratory, citizens can download new applications free of charge, test and evaluate them, and in this way participate in improving the performance of the product and aligning it with the needs of end users – citizens.

Some of the products and services that citizens will be able to get to know are the etinerary application – a personal itinerary that helps the user plan a personalised trip or stay at a destination, the Safety Barometer application that brings all utility information and warnings about traffic problems to the citizens of Rijeka in one place, then Smart Waste – a smart litter bin – a system intended for utility companies and citizens that rationalizes the waste management process and many others.
