During the meeting further cooperation and partnership between the University of Toronto and the University of Rijeka and the City of Rijeka were discussed, as well as possibilities for developing joint projects.

The City of Rijeka enables pupils in elementary schools founded by the City to attend Civic education lessons with the aim of promoting non-violence, tolerance and solidarity and developing values based on acceptance of diversity and respect for human rights as well as on understanding life in civil society. The programme “My Rijeka” is implemented by the City of Rijeka, led by the idea of providing an opportunity to pupils to become more knowledgeable about their own city and to create a positive emotional relationship towards their immediate environment. There are also after-school programmes and full-day classes, a programme of teaching assistants for pupils with disabilities, and various other programmes for different groups of pupils.

Now the City of Rijeka is working on the introduction of Health Education. For this purpose, all relevant and available research related to the topic is studied and it cooperates with experts in order to prepare programmes and accompanying manuals for pupils and guidelines for teachers. Given that very broad and diverse competencies are included, it is also planned to provide an education system for teachers who will implement it, in order that the programme may be implemented in a quality manner.
