At the invitation of the mayor of the city of Khiva, Uzbekistan, the mayor of Rijeka Marko Filipović travelled to Khiva where he attended the inauguration of a photo exhibition titled “Rijeka – European Capital of Culture”.

This is a return visit given that in April this year, representatives of the International Organisation TURKSOY and Khiva representatives visited our city on the occasion of the opening of the exhibition “Impressions from Khiva” on display at that time, staged in cooperation with that organisation, with the aim of presenting the Cultural Capital of the Turkic World 2020 – Khiva.

OPENING OF THE EXHIBITION ABOUT RIJEKA IN UZBEKISTAN

As a continuation of these friendly events, a photo exhibition titled “Rijeka – European Capital of Culture” was inaugurated this year in Khiva on 3 December. The photo exhibition is on display at Tosh Hovli in the State Museum-Reserve ”Ichan-Kala”.

In addition to mayor Filipovic, the opening ceremony was attended by Dusen Kaseinov, TURKSOY Secretary General, Tursunali Koziev, director of the Uzbekistan Cultural Heritage Agency, Horezm Botir Saidov, deputy governor and Temur Davletov, Khiva mayor.

The representatives of the two cities, Rijeka and Khiva, agreed to further promote their cooperation in the fields of culture and tourism and thus raise it to a higher level in the future.

EXHIBITION DEDICATED TO RIJEKA

TURKSOY is an international cultural organisation of countries and regions inhabited by Turkic people speaking Turkic languages. It was established in 1993 after the culture ministers of Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan and Turkey signed a founding agreement. TURKSOY is headquartered in Ankara, Turkey.

The organisation has its roots in meetings in 1992 in Baku and Istanbul, where culture ministers from Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, Turkey and Turkmenistan pledged to co-operate in a common cultural framework. TURKSOY was subsequently established by an agreement signed on 12 July 1993 in Almaty.
