Rijeka is the “smartest” big city and the “Champion of EU funds” in the selection of the best cities in Croatia, organised by the portal Gradonačelnik.hr, in cooperation with the daily newspaper Jutarnji list and the Ipsos agency, which was concluded on Thursday with the award ceremony in Opatija.

With the announcement of the winners and the presentation of the plaques to the winners, this year’s selection of the Best City was concluded yesterday in Opatija in a solemn ceremony, organised for the fifth consecutive year by the portal Gradonačelnik.hr in cooperation with the daily newspaper Jutarnji list and the Ipsos agency.

The City of Rijeka achieved the greatest success this year by winning the title in two categories: the City of Rijeka won in the “Big City” category, and it is also the winner of this year’s selection for the best city in drawing down funds from the European Union.

Over the last four years, Rijeka has drawn down HRK 53.8 million from EU funds.

The cities with the best results in the application of smart solutions in organising the activity of the city administration, maintaining infrastructure and saving energy were chosen Within the Smart City award.

The partner in the organisation of the Smart City selection is the Apsolon agency, which developed the selection methodology. Rijeka has won the Smart City award among the big cities, Zaprešić is the winner in the category medium cities, and the city of Krk is the best among small cities.

The announcement of the best cities was also attended by Prime Minister Andrej Plenković, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of the Sea, Transport and Infrastructure Oleg Butković, Minister of Labour, Pension System, Family and Social Policies Marin Piletić, Minister of Regional Development and EU Funds Nataša Tramišak and Minister of Justice and Administration Ivan Malenic.
