Owing to its achievements, in 1996, UNICEF awarded the prestigious title of “Baby-Friendly Hospital” to the Clinic of Gynecology and Obstetrics of the Clinical Hospital Center Rijeka, as the first such clinic in the Republic of Croatia. In 2007, UNICEF renewed the status of a baby-friendly hospital for the Maternity Ward, whereby confirming its dedication to the promotion and encouragement of breastfeeding as the best nutrition at the beginning of life and undeniable advantages for both mothers and children.

While renewing the status of a baby-friendly hospital and the promotion of breastfeeding, the City of Rijeka provided its full support to the CHC Rijeka, among others, by subsidizing the course of psychophysical preparation of pregnant women for labour and the publication of promotional and education materials.
