In 1983, when the first agreement was signed with the former Rijeka Public Health Institute, the entity Dječji vrtić Rijeka (kindergartens) began to introduce more intensely healthy foods such as: millet, oat flakes, polenta, lentils, wheat sprouts, different types of milk and various milk products, olive oil, half-whole wheat bread, vegetable soups, vegetables, and spreads prepared on the premises.

As children arrive with different eating habits, many efforts and skills are put so that the offered foods are acceptable to children, and this necessarily requires parents’ cooperation and support.

The health coordinators of the entity Dječji vrtić Rijeka, in cooperation with the Food Department of the Educational Public Health Institute prepare seasonal menus that must meet the optimum intake of represented food substances and sufficient fiber intake.

Balanced nutrition for children in kindergartens is provided by a regular number of meals in accordance with the recommended energy quantities and nutritional substances.

Since 2008/2009, in cooperation with the Educational Public Health Institute of the PGŽ County within the entity Dječji vrtić Rijeka, premises have been provided for children suffering from celiac disease, for whom food is prepared gluten-free, as well as food for children who suffer from food allergies or other chronic diseases.
