Brief description of the project, objectives and expected result of the project

In accordance with the Waste Management Strategy of the Republic of Croatia and the Waste Management Plan of the Republic of Croatia for the period 2017-2022, the goals and measures relating to municipal waste management have been determined, as well as the planned infrastructure, equipment and the device required for separate waste collection. By acquiring vehicles for separate waste collection we contribute to the establishment of a comprehensive and well-connected waste management system and the set goals of increasing the waste separation rate. Utility company Čistoća is a provider of the public waste collection service in the territory of 9 local self-government units and is implementing this project in order to increase the amount of separately collected waste, but also to reduce the amount of waste disposed of in landfills.

In accordance with the applicable regulations and in accordance with the mentioned Strategy and Plan, the obligation is to increase the share of separately collected waste, and by acquiring the vehicle, that utility company Čistoća purchases within this project, the efficiency of collecting valuable types of waste from underground, semi-underground and above-ground bell-shaped containers in public areas will be greatly increased. The improved efficiency will be the result of a larger volume and the ability to compress the collected waste with a pressure plate on the vehicle, which the vehicles currently used for this purpose do not have. In addition to the possibility of collecting larger amounts of waste during one run, the project greatly streamlines and optimizes operations by saving time, fuel, human resources and reducing emissions of pollutants into the environment.

Considering that the development of environmental awareness and directing the behaviour of citizens in order to protect the environment, encouraging the reduction of unnecessary waste, reuse and increasing separate waste collection is a complex and long-term process, within project implementation, promotional activities will be carried out, namely education of citizens in the territory where utility company Čistoća provides services, about separate waste collection and guided by the principles of priority (hierarchy) of waste management.

Owing to project implementation, the amount of separately collected waste – plastic, metal, multilayer packaging, glass and paper and cardboard will increase. In accordance with the Instructions, the vehicle will be marked with the waste type that it collects.

All users of the services provided by Čistoća will be included in the implementation of promotional activities and informed on sustainable waste management. Rijeka (total 80,370 households).
