Competent authority

Ministry of Culture, as part of the public call “Art and Culture 54+”

Description

The project starts from the fact that Rijeka is a city of workers. In the golden age of industrial production in Rijeka, much attention was paid to the education of workers within the factory complexes, and the factories took care of the social and cultural progress of their workers. Reading rooms, film sections, exhibitions and shows were organised, factory newspapers were published, etc. Jointly organised free time in the former Rijeka factories and shipyards was popularly called “dopolavoro” (afterwork). After the renovation of the former Rikard Benčić factory complex under the European Regional Development Fund, the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, project promotor, will move there.

Owing to this, a new cultural centre in Rijeka is being formed, which will bring together former workers of the closed factories and shipyards in Rijeka (54+ people), who until the 1990s called such premises their own. In this complex, in cooperation with other cultural and artistic institutions and associations in the city of Rijeka, they will finally start creating contents that will be co-created by former workers. In other words, owing to the intergenerational dialogue between cultural workers and the target group (54+) forms of organised free time will be created, modelled on former dopolavoro (after-work).

The project forms part of the programme Rijeka 2020 – European Capital of Culture.

Project activities

Therefore, we invited several Croatian artists and cultural experts to devise in a quality manner and implement 6 workshops, by applying newly acquired knowledge, where a minimum of 50 people over the age of 54 will take part. These workshops are dedicated to Performance, Painting, Photography, Cultural Criticism, Exhibition Guides and Ambassadors of Rijeka 2020 – European Capitals of Culture.

Project result

The result of this project will be a book “Čitanka o dopolavoru” (Reading book about after-work) and a joint exhibition to be given by artists, cultural experts and people over 54 years of age, tackling the topic of the cultural phenomenon dopolavoro (after-work) yesterday, today, tomorrow with specific participatory cultural and artistic products of the target group 54+ created during workshops.
